Chinese firm Meizu isn’t quite as well-known as the likes of Huawei and Xiaomi, but it still produces some capable devices for the price.

Late last year, we saw Meizu smartphones come to the country via local distributor 2C Telecoms, bringing the M3 Note and the Pro 6 to our shores.

Now, it seems like the Chinese brand has opted to directly expand its presence in the country, opening a South African office, according to 2C Telecoms.

The answer came after Gearburn enquired about local availability of the Meizu Pro 7.

“The product road map has changed quite a bit and there have been some developments with the arrangement with regards to Meizu (sic) as HQ have officially opened an SA office,” a representative for 2C Telecoms told Gearburn.

In response to queries regarding the SA office, a “Meizu South Africa” representative said that they “envision great success for the brand in both awareness and sales of our devices within the local domestic market”.

Meizu smartphones are no stranger to the South African market though, even before 2C Telecoms got involved. The Meizu M2 Note was available from the now-shuttered Orange Store, bringing decent specs for roughly R3000.

The company has also revealed its latest flagship this week, in the form of the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus. The devices pack a rear-mounted mini AMOLED display, a 12MP dual-camera arrangement (similar to Huawei’s) and a MediaTek Helio X30 chipset.

Their specs are similar to Xiaomi but their pricing is off, 2959 for the M3 note is almost equivalent of the Redmi Note 2 and it's quite pricey.

I was very happy with my Meizu M2 Note. If it was not stolen in my smash and grab, I would still be using it quite happily.

Same as Xiaomi. Their flavor of Android is skinned to death and you get no Android updates for the duration of the device. No thanks!

I received quite a few updates actually. The thing is, they were doing lots of updates to Flyme, which is their version of Android, but the Android version itself were not being updated :(

At least with Miui/Flyme you are getting the necessary security updates. You also can more than often root these phones, flash roms on them and get newer versions. Unlike my LG G4 which is still sitting on a version of Android M from early 2016, no security updates, or my old S4 which was on an older version of M and so on.
