Mercedes-Benz launches home battery

This is early days yet, and good news for the consumer (and the planet). The next thing there will be a flurry of similar products, and then a call for better standardisation for interchangeability of ecosystem components.

I look forward to the eventual Tesla v Benz comparison...

The Chinese will flood the market with competing products at a lesser price.

Don't knock what they'll produce just yet; check this out, the largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries in the world:

Considering how well priced Merc's and their parts are, this battery will do exceptionally well in South Africa.

So now you can decide between a work of art wallmount and a trashcan... hmm

Way too big, and doesn't seem to have any smart capabilties

Too little info as yet - I'm bullish on Merc here; they certainly have the knowledge to put as much intelligence in to the battery as Tesla, and have a MASSIVE advantage of a worldwide distribution and servicing network. They're used to shipping 2 ton hunks of metal around the globe, so this isn't an issue for them. For Tesla to enter ZA, they have to get a local partner, set up a distribution and maintenance network and then sell them.

Looks about the same size Tesla's battery? And the website also shows the wall-mount option.

Edit: Some decent English info here - https://schlauerspeichern.de/Batteriespeicher_Datenblatt_Home_DE_EN.pdf - pretty much exactly the same size if you take the same capacities

Either way, cool stuff - competition is good.

It's not even remotely the same size. The Tesla Powerwall is 18cm, which is still still almost too big, and the Mercedes battery is 29.5cm. Which is just far too big.

As for the smart features, yeah Mercedes could do some interesting stuff here. And their distribution is certainly better than Tesla's

I was referring to volume (not sure what other metric you could use? You seem to use thickness?) where they are the same, capacity-for-capacity. Mercedes seems to be little blocks you can click on top of each other to make a tower, and Tesla you do a line on the wall.

The big take-away is that a week ago, there was only one famous player in this space. Now there are two. And Merc seems to have been getting this ready for ages, it has a string of certifications the length of my arm in their spec.

The only metric that matters (to me) is how far off the wall this would bulge. Ideally it would only be a couple of mm, but at the moment 180mm seams to be the best. Now if they could get that down to 10mm...:)

MBHPP has done an absolutely brilliant job in F1 with the new power unit, so they really can be on the cutting edge here.

Okay well, for me (and probably LOTS of other people), it'd be much easier for me to find a corner to stand a 460x450mm tower in than find enough wall space to put a string of 860x1290mm batteries. I would have to find space on an outside wall, and in the Durban sun I'm not sure that'd be a particularly good idea.

Choices are good. Different strokes and all that.
