Any suggestions on what best to use to merge different avi files into one. Also what do you suggest as being the best media player to watch videos with. Am using VCL Portable in place of Microsoft but am sure that there must be something better out there.

What are the source AVI files? Is it one file which was previously split? Or are these different sources (size, bitrate, codec?)

For a nice cheap option... try Windows Movie Maker which comes with XP and Vista. Does a reasonable job.

I also use VLC (Full version) or Windows Media Player. They do the job just fine.

I use VLC too...it can automatically repair some of the broken files.:) Heard good things about MPlayer...but haven't tried it yet.

Movie Maker will default to WMV, I dunno if it will give you other options to save as. I usually just run the resulting WMV file through DivX Converter or ZCVideoConverter.

I see the other guys suggesting ViftualDub though... that sounds like a good possibility.

Did you possibly get these split AVI files off the SAIX news server? Because I am also battling to re-join them...

The guys there suggested this one...

Virtual Dud is probably best to join AVI's together just read the tut on it or you will end up with Huge 10GB files after a merge :p

Could try Zoom Player - [check sig] I use it along with Real alt, CCCP & Haali Media spliter to play .mkv/.rmvb/H.264/Mp4 aswell as all the other common formats. I mostly use it for the Anime I watch :)

This is what finally did the trick.... Master Splitter joined it back together correctly! :)

(Thanks Bwana ;) )

btw, I think the way this is supposed to work is to download everything, then run QuickPar on the par files and that is supposed to re-join the file. At least that is the way it worked with some of the other ones I have downloaded.
