What are the chances of successfully creating a mesh network like seattlewireless?

Well i dont think the local governments have budget for it but it doesn't stop allof us as individuals setting up a mesh grid

Also due to current regulations...Telkom has to carry any cross boundary wall connections unless otherwise authorised eg Sentechs licencse..... I dont think ICASA will had them out that easily due to the revenue generation they can get from licencing

But as users.....well if there was something like that setup i think many of us would buy in to it.......

None. BUT if someone starts hooking it up to the net then there will be hassles. Good luck to them with bringing it down.

If you're interested in creating something similar to SeattleWireless in JHB, join JaWug.
Exactly the same concept.

Step 1) Find your GPS co-ordinates (use a GPS, Ananzi's Road Maps, or even Sentech's Zonelocator)
Step 2) Plot your node on http://www.nodedb.com/africa/za/johannesburg/? (If you're in JHB)
Step 3) Visit http://www.daffy.za.net/jawug/ - register yourself as an owner.

Then look on nodedb to see if there is someone near you (1 node, 20 nodes, the more the merrier). Contact them and arrange the link, you'll need to check that you have Line of Sight with them.

Eventually, there will be enough of these little networks, they will all merge into each other and we'll have JHB covered.

Tell all your friends...
Come and join us.. :)

hmmm,
Don't let ICASA or Telkom see this site. ICASA can't get the SNO licensed, but for damn sure they'll try to shoot you down. Effectively the law states that the 2.4 GHz band is unlicensed, but it is illegal to broadcast on these frequencies. Definition of broadcast: sending a signal over a public road! So it is legal to set up an unlicensed Wireless node, as long as none of the signals cross a road. If you broadcast, you need a license from ICASA.

Welcome to the advanced telecommunications policy of South Africa.

how can it be illegal to broadcast on unlicensed frequencies?

I'm in Pretoria, so I'm interested in starting something like this here. I'm just wondering what kind of interest there would be from the users' side.

Daffy, how long has jawug been going?

Licenses have to do with usage. Same issue as VOIP, it's legal to use within your organisation, but you aren't allowed to route calls out of your organisation.

The 2.4 GHz frequencies are only unlicensed for narrow-casting. i.e. You don't need a license within your own building, but you can't send it over roads to another building.

In theory, if you want to do this, you should either:
1. route it via a wired connection of some type
2. pay Sentech to set up a 2.5GHz link (falls within their multimedia license)
3. set up a microwave link via telkom or sentech
4. Apply for a license from ICASA - (not very likely to be successful)

Having said that, it is almost impossible to enforce.

The main JaWug Network has been running for approx 3 years, and now I'm trying to expand it :)

We're pretty much operating on the fringes of legality, but if you think about it, who would get prosecuted first? A bunch of people just playing around, or Wireless ISPs that are making money out of it.

We dont provide internet connectivity on the network. Wireless ISP's do.
We dont make any money, its a community thing (could even be argued as educational).

If you can find 1 example of a Wireless ISP that has been shutdown by ICASA, then I'd be concerned, but to my knowledge, this has yet to happen.

If you go visit http://www.daffy.za.net/jawug/ there's a page (called costs) that has some info on what equipment you'll need and cost estimates.
I'm working on more documentation, which I hope to have up on the site by the end of the week.

Incorrect.
I worked for MegaWAN.

They ceased operations because they were making a loss (Management couldn't manage their own personal finances, let alone 200 or so users)

All cases against MegaWAN were dropped. And the 1 case in PMB was appealed and MegaWAN won.

We had 1 Highsite that exceeded 100mW, and when I found out, I turned down to legal limits at the complaints of many users.

OT but, I could not get in early enough to get the R100 WLAN cards at Cyberdyne. Anyone know where else I can pick up WLAN 802.11b cards fro under R150 (email me off the forum or post here). Now this may seem strange but I need a busted card. Basically Im building something the same so I need to get a good look at the layout of the circuits on the card. Any ideas where I can get a non-functional card (dont say phone X, rather say here's a card. Unless its a definite lead. I can do my own fishing at PC shops)

If anyone bought 100 of those R100 WLAN cards at cyberdyne.. I need 3 please.
