MetroFibre making strange changes to its reseller fibre packages

ok, so what is this big announcement?

1 Gbit package already exists, 500/500 is decent. Could they be the first FNO in South Africa to go over Gigabit speeds?

in all honesty for a house do you need more than Gigabit speeds? I consider our house a heavy user and even so with our Gigabit line never never gets fully utilized

Faster is always good. Yes, most people won't be able to go faster then gigabit anyway, but that shouldn't stop technology from progressing

I am on 500/500, single, stay alone. If I had a family I would be begging for 2500

Between the 5 of us gaming, streaming, working remotely (which probably takes up the most) the 100 Meg is just fine. Never had issues except for total outages.

When it comes to MFN that is a different kettle of fish. Remember during COVID when others got a free upgrade to double speed? I got absolutely nothing from Cool Ideas MFN. A while ago my 50 Meg went to 100 Meg but I had to pay more Now it seems like they are just going to increase the price again but everyone says that prices are going down.

Seriously, for what? We can have 35-50 users not even being able to utilise the capacity of 300mbps for work related activities constantly? onedrive for business , teams, and other cloud applications.

I think our HQ that supports 3000 users and connectivity from all other countries (over 100) has 2x 10gbp lines. Nobody has complained of issues.

So wth does a home user need 500mbps - it's can't be just gaming?

Really do wonder what the cost is for an FNO to offer 10Mbps line vs 1Gbps line
And there you have it.

many FNO's have been subsidizing the entry level products, with the high end ones.

The actual cost difference is relatively small. It will largely depend on the area of the roll-out, but financing payments on the upfront capital investment is the same whether the fiber line is 10Mbps or 1Gbps.

In terms of the monthly costs, they will likely be paying a moderate amount each month to the metro fiber providers like DFA and Openserve. Those costs will increase based on bandwidth, but typically a 1 gig link costs R30k pm a 10Gig link will cost about R70k pm. This varies highly by area, but the ratio is very similar. That is much smaller that the repayments on millions in capital upfront.

Lastly there is the datacenter infrastructure where they can peer with ISP's but they charge ISP's for those costs, so that does not affect the FNO rental.

Can't see a possible reason for that. Please show us your monthly usage. Maybe there are others you are funding without your knowledge?
The reason is speed and not usage. I am in IT and often need to do large transfers afterhours. So I can get work done much faster on 500 than 50. I much prefer spending an extra R1000 per month and I get 10 hours of my life a month back. I dunno usage, maybe max 800gb per month?

so, as per google-fu, on a 500/500, one can stream ultra HD video to 20 devices simultaneously or download 1 HD video in under 1 minute.

Do you watch 1440 movies per day ? With one movie per minute?

I know of a guy who has got continuous downloads on 2 machines. I asked him once when he is he going to read/see whatever he has downloaded and he said he likes the idea that he has it on his machine whenever he wants it.

I think it is same concept of accumulating books (or things) and not really reading/utilizing them in one's lifetime. George carlin said something about "stuff".

p.s. Reminds me to get rid of my books.

So the other 5 members in the house also have to do that and that’s why he needs a 2.5gbps line?

He must be new to fibre. The novelty will wear off or will get tired of buying hdds.

You can use the internet for work also, it’s nit just for pr0n.

For me it’s about saving time when I need to work. I maybe watch one movie a month

Faster speeds aren't for downloading more content. It's basically just for time. How long are you willing to wait for that 50GB download because essentially even a 5Mbps ADSL line can be used for gaming and streaming etc but will take ages to download a 50GB file so if you don't want to wait then 1Gbps.
