Miami seeks countywide wireless Internet
MIAMI, July 15 (UPI) -- Miami Mayor Carlos Alvarez says he is aiming to have a $200 million wireless Internet network spanning all of Dade County by 2008.
Alvarez and other Miami-Dade officials say such access could "erase" the area's "digital divide," the Miami Herald reported Saturday.
"This will definitely help us to close the achievement gap," School Board member Ana Rivas Logan said.
Miami-Date would join a growing number of cities and counties, large and small, around the country that increasingly view wireless Internet as a utility, just like electricity.
Philadelphia, San Francisco and New York are among the cities planning free high-speed wireless Internet access. New York City's parks are scheduled to get it by the end of the summer.
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., announced a plan Tuesday to bring high-speed wireless access to homes, businesses and communities across upstate New York.

For anyone interested (or bored) here is a GE placemark for Dade County.. the entire county only has a population of under 2.5 million and an area of 2,000 square miles (5,100sq km). (Remember to enable 2nd level admin regions under Borders to see the size of the county).
Some people sure have initiative over there in the US.. perhaps they would consider a swop for some Gov officials?
