Why the hell do they need a M$ tool if they have physical access to the PC?

Sounds to me like the investigators learned to use Excel yesterday and today they are learning to use the PC forensics in 3 easy steps wizard.

To make it straitforward for people who no nothing about computers I'll bet.

As long as they still have to have a warrant for the search, it's not so bad. It just depends on whom has access to these things.

I suppose you might be thinking.... "oh.. this is not so bad"... but what if the police are Zimbabwe police... Chinese police... Russian police.. ?

From the article:

More than 2,000 officers in 15 countries, including Poland, the Philippines, Germany, New Zealand and the United States, are using the device, which Microsoft provides free.

"These are things that we invest substantial resources in, but not from the perspective of selling to make money," Smith said in an interview. "We're doing this to help ensure that the Internet stays safe."

What's the bet these are mostly used to fight "piracy" of M$ software?

Then just don't let those countries have access to this technology.

EDIT: Even if they get he technology through illicit means it's a bit rich telling a mother of a raped 5 year old " Yeah sorry but we could have stopped this crime but we were worried about the actions of Russian cop if he got his hands on the technology we would have used to catch the criminal."

FYI Russia produces a lot of child pron. The child pron they produce or produced was made by the actual parents themselves or with parental consent. Most child abuse is not perpetrated by strangers who kidnap children on the street and then take them to some underground video labs, its the parents and close relatives who do it either for money or because they are pedos (or both). The mother above should be the prime suspect in the case
and if not - wth was she to let her child be used for child pron?

We need to put things in context. Most child abuse is not done for child pron. Child pron is an emotive reason used to erode personal liberties the same way that TERRORISM is. In other words, if you password protect something on your PC you must be a child pronographer or a terrorist. YES I'm all for putting away child pronographers or molesters and terrorists but we should
not do so at the expense of our liberties. If they want to go after child pronographers track the sites down and find out who is hosting them (if not botnet based) and try to identify the victims from the images then find those
victims and bash a few skulls from then on.

If governments want to introduce such laws let them be honest about it at least. Say - we want to know what you low life hoi-poloi think about us, and we want to get rid those who disagree or question our policies.

Google is doing the same thing with the kiddie porn freaks, they just handed over a database of 60 000 offenders to the German police.

Where did you read this?

If I was doing anything that would warrant the police getting physical access to my computer, I would make sure to use some top-notch encryption. TrueCrypt comes to mind :D

Ah, I love TrueCrypt... :D :D

Sorry Officer that is NOT MY Dope

Where did you read this?
Ah, I love TrueCrypt... :D :D

Dream on -- the NSA has cracked every code know to man ( and Martian )

The only safe code is a "one-time-pad" and even that can now be "snooped"

The only "safe" PC is one with instantaneous combustion THERMITE attached to it.

READ KEVIN MITNICKS Books -- EVERYONE is a criminal ( some do not even get their "day-in-court" )

Did you know that the SAN latest Frigates run Windows NT as their operations suite :D

Perhaps Selebi will use an MS Porn Buster Tool to crack those perps :D

Please guys serious now -- tell me about the ATMS's
