Microsoft is giving Windows 7 and 8 users no choice but to upgrade to Windows 10

Windows 7 and 8 users are seeing a new prompt to upgrade to Windows 10 that includes just two options: "Upgrade now" or "Upgrade tonight."

The message, which was spotted by InfoWorld, tells the user that Windows 10 is "free for a limited time" before displaying two big buttons. There is no option to permanently postpone the upgrade process beyond a small red cross in the top right corner.

Microsoft has previously been downloading large primer files for Windows 10 onto computers ready for a potential upgrade, even if the user had never given any intention of wanting the new operating system.

The company has been pushing users to upgrade to Windows 10 for some time now, but the no-way-out pop-up window is a new development.

The small red cross in the corner certainly sounds like a choice to me...

I have friends who's sticking it out with Windows 7. They said ever since they've cancelled this upgrade window (red cross), they had unexplained restarts and things not working properly on their PC's. Like MS is sabotaging their PC and forcing their hand. (Placebo effect?)

But why postpone? I'm not a MS fan, but I upgraded all my Windows 7 PC's to 10 and so far have no problems. There is a few small things I don't like, but over all it's a pleasant experience. Though, only reason I have Windows is for gaming.

I'm using Win7 that includes Windows media center on my HTPC, Windows 10 doesn't come with WMC right? So upgrading will screw that up

I was using 10, then went back to 7, and disabled the update notification

We are forced to use Windows on a couple of poor suffering machines at work - because the vendor software only run runs on Windows. We pretty sure we could run it on Linux or in a VM but thats specifically prohibited. The machines are partitioned in their own vlan and, essentially isolated, so they can do no harm to themselves or others.

The vendor software is unsupported on windows 10 and we are certainly not going to put a domain in place of them - so its very annoying when a company attempts to force people to upgrade. Just one wrong click and we will have to waste time restoring a disk image.

As I said. Just disable updates or any if it must any internet connection. I run lots of industrial programs with no issues.

I'll definitely be using this when I get back home. I detest being forced to do something I see no need for. My machine is stable and I am really comfortable with Windows 7. Better the devil I am familiar with than something that I ain't.

Note that worked with that Windows 10 icon on the notification area. Not sure if this new one is the same KB. But I haven't seen this new one yet.

Have a few things not working under 10 on my NUC. Will go back to 8.1 the weekend. One thing is the RST from Intel. Not supported for Windows 10
