Microsoft is giving Windows 7 and 8 users no choice but to upgrade to Windows 10

What is unpolished about Windows 10 please?
I'm curious too, there are some things that are just plain crap, but unpolished? Nah. It's still the same kernel as 7 and 8 only with the benefit of about 7 years of refinement.

And a metric ****load of spyware and telemetry added.

My wife's pc was upgraded in the middle of the day, while she was away from the laptop. So far, so good.

One thing i cannot stand about W10 is the W10 updates, they dont mention how big it is. All they give is a bar.

Could be 5GB for all I know.

I also notice that when Updates are installed and the PC needs a restart, my network connection all of a sudden, doesn't work. They kinda forcing me to restart.
A few times I had a couple of tabs open, busy with research, then boom, no internet. Then I noticed there is a "Update and restart" in the restart menu. Now I must restart and start my research from scratch.

My win 10 pc had slow start up and wake from sleep. I had to go to registery to disable ULPS and that fixed the issue.
There was a bug where I couldn't change default browser. And I disabled cortana but shes floating around in task manager. File defaults get reseted every now and then. And two finger scroll got inverted  . Network settings gotten more obscure and Aero is still gone.

But the good news is that it gotten much better than what it was last year....

Give it 5 years to fix Windows, then come back. During this time Microsoft will lose battle for dominating phone and tablet market and will allow to use Windows on desktop in more civilised manner.

I really hate that they changed the code behind VPN connections (apparently) and that I had to screw around in regedit and weird settings for 2h just to get it working like it did on 7/8...

What's different about VPNs? Mine has worked fine from day one. It's a little annoying that Windows 10 opens a 'Network & Internet' screen to dial into it when I click on my VPN in the notification bar, but it's only a mild nuisance.

Mine didn't, and since I need it for work it was pretty annoying. But it's sorted now since I played with settings:

edit: more info here http://superuser.com/a/966833/8672

Using a combination of PS, regedit and Lan Settings I managed to resolve all my issues.

Well I have the problem that we are using Pastel Partner 2003 and the SQL engine that comes bundles does not run in Win8 OR Win10.

I was forced to jump to WIN7 because XP would not run on the new machine.

Soon we will be forced to upgrade to Sage Pastel at a astonishing price in order to carry on working.

Sage isn't that expensive though? At least relative to the kind of business that would require each package. Using 13 year old software probably isn't a terrific idea tbh.

Three clients today called me and said windows 10 was installing on their pc's. All three said they definitely didn't say or click yes to the upgrade. That's my tomorrow booked already then, reverting these machines (and probably more by tomorrow) back to Windows 7. They are all quite upset, as they'd all been refusing the upgrade offer for months now. Seems something changed then in the upgrade offer 'modus operandi'.

WTF Microsoft? Have you no idea how much you are pi$$ing people off here? What's with all this heavy-handed $hit?

If that's happening, it's totally unacceptable.

Paul Thurrott has a disturbing piece today: "Microsoft’s Year of Living Dangerously":

"Since October, however, we’ve seen numerous reports of Windows 10 being silently installed on users’ computers. And while some of these incidents are no doubt user error, it’s also fair to point out that installing Windows 10 using the “nagware” prompts that Microsoft puts all over Windows 7/8.x these days requires the user to explicitly OK at least two very obvious prompts.

Like UFO sightings, reports of unintended Windows 10 installs seem to follow a pattern. In this case, it’s that these reports multiply whenever Microsoft expands the Windows 10 “nagware” prompt to ever-more PCs. And in recent days, these reports have multiplied in an alarming way."

If true, Microsoft must fix it fast, and humbly apologise. Or face widespread rebellion. I for one won't stand for it.

Comparing W8.1 to Win 10, win 10 is much of an improvement. Not sure why people hate W10, I can understand hating W8.1

Yet Win 7 is still my personal Fav.

main reason is slow boot up and shut down with the latest hardware. I went back to W8 bcause of this reason.

It depends on the requirements. If one is interested in performance, bells n whistles maybe even productivity, then yes. From a security, privacy point of view Windows 10 is a big no no. Please don't take my word for it. A few minutes of research should clear up any confusion.
