And Mary Jo Foley has this piece: "
How existing Windows users can refuse Microsoft's Windows 10 updates".
Few outside people are more plugged in about what's really happening at Msft than MJF.
An accurate summation of the whole matter. Yes it is questionable whether it makes much sense to install new OSs on old machines, EXCEPT if you are just trying to see what can be done with an old PC/desktop.
BUT once you are in the proverbial pile of manure, there is not much you can do except continue and start from scratch...
THEN what one wants (as the article also suggests) is the ability to dictate WHEN updates will happen and how. Now THIS is the issue I have at the moment. Even though I have implemented every single step suggested on numerous fora, I still get caught with update happening behind the scenes.
We have the "Store", which updates just about whenever it wants to.
We have MS Edge that sometimes ignores your update settings and then causes trouble if you are busy on the Internet
We have IE 11 also doing updates ( such as this last one) that caused issues with MS Edge 13 as well.
And then Windows 10 itself --- these updates also choose to ignore your settings at times.
And, you have the other MS product updates which in theory should not cause issues but they do.
Oh I forgot about that blasted thing called xbox ----- they are also on a mission of their own ...
Lastly, you have OEM driver updates coming through. They take absolutely no notice of your settings and cause untold issues. HP is at the moment the one that gives me no end of hell.
Someone in MS should sit down and sort out the update policy for all MS internals and give the user total control over when how and where these updates are done.
