Microsoft is giving Windows 7 and 8 users no choice but to upgrade to Windows 10

Perhaps you didn't use RAS access modems.
BTW, It is the only interface with a "metered" attribute enabled by default, a reason why it is "perfectly" screwed up. ;)

And Mary Jo Foley has this piece: "How existing Windows users can refuse Microsoft's Windows 10 updates".

Few outside people are more plugged in about what's really happening at Msft than MJF.

An accurate summation of the whole matter. Yes it is questionable whether it makes much sense to install new OSs on old machines, EXCEPT if you are just trying to see what can be done with an old PC/desktop.

BUT once you are in the proverbial pile of manure, there is not much you can do except continue and start from scratch...

THEN what one wants (as the article also suggests) is the ability to dictate WHEN updates will happen and how. Now THIS is the issue I have at the moment. Even though I have implemented every single step suggested on numerous fora, I still get caught with update happening behind the scenes.

We have the "Store", which updates just about whenever it wants to.
We have MS Edge that sometimes ignores your update settings and then causes trouble if you are busy on the Internet
We have IE 11 also doing updates ( such as this last one) that caused issues with MS Edge 13 as well.
And then Windows 10 itself --- these updates also choose to ignore your settings at times.
And, you have the other MS product updates which in theory should not cause issues but they do.
Oh I forgot about that blasted thing called xbox ----- they are also on a mission of their own ...
Lastly, you have OEM driver updates coming through. They take absolutely no notice of your settings and cause untold issues. HP is at the moment the one that gives me no end of hell.

Someone in MS should sit down and sort out the update policy for all MS internals and give the user total control over when how and where these updates are done.

Well you know what? I did just that. I sat down and sorted it out myself. I installed Linux. There you go, frikkin' sorted, Microsoft.

Two pc's in my house, both running Linux Mint. Two media centres - both running Openelec.

Back on topic:

I had a call just an hour ago from an 88-year-old client. Her 6-month-old Windows 8.1 laptop had been force fed Windows 10 overnight and she was mightily annoyed.

She's quite tech-savvy despite her years and the sort of lovely old lady you'd be happy to call your Gran.

So she says to me, and I kid you not:

"Can you come and see me tomorrow to talk about putting Ubuntu on my laptop please?"

I'm still reeling and smiling at the same time.

You can prolly give her a Chromebook and it'll be enough. Dunno why you're so happy about it.

Agreed. I think had she known such a thing as a chromebook existed when she went shopping for a laptop last year she probably would have bought one.

Why am I happy? Because it shows just how seriously annoyed many, many people are with this tactic of Microsoft's - forcing people to upgrade to their garbage, ugly, beta OS filled with kiddie-tiles and spyware.

It's the lack of choice. It's the underhanded way they are doing it. People don't like that. And when octagenarians start saying they are pi$$ed, then you know this isn't just a few tech geeks and linux fanbois trolling.

IMO, this whole windows 10 forced upgrade thing is going to get ugly.

Don't know if this has been mentioned in a link yet, but there is a tool that disables the notification system, and doesn't affect the update, I think it's called GWX control panel

Too late for many. I've lost count of how many people I've installed GWX Control Panel for.

So offering it for free was not enough incentive... now they forcing it so hard... what's the catch? There must be a catch, if there wasn't MS would just be chill...

How do you render a PC useless?

Install Windows 8-10

Now you are exaggerating !

MY PC is doing everything I want it to do ....... I just ignore the Apps, and in principle I agree with Sunbird. The move to come up with a one for all UI is vastly over rated.

True, trying to treat a desktop or laptop like a it's mobile device with all the Apps and Tiles...

Uhm how is that treating it like a mobile device. Imo apps are programs by another name (a rose and whatnot). Tiles give you the info you need at a glance. An additional feature means they're treating it like a mobile devices just because they brought it to mobile first? That's just me.

I must say that I have a triple boot workstation, but can't remember the last time I used my Win 10. I do everything and more in Linux. My migration all started after the Snowden leaks etc., and now Microsoft forcing their free Windows that is probably their most excellent information gathering tool. Why else is it free?

It's not free.
