Microsoft to unveil “Windows 9″

The will call it "Garden" - because its what you'll find between Gates and Windows :D

The switch also represents a desire to erase the ill will generated by Windows 8, ...

“Windows 8 was not a shining moment for Microsoft,” said Michael Silver, an analyst at tech research firm Gartner. “Probably the biggest issue that lingers is the negative brand equity in the name.”

Should be a good one, judging by 20 years (which is ~ gazillion computer years) of knit-one-slip-one by MS.

They have lost their core focus. They are going to now concentrate on the cloud and smartphones instead of a desktop OS.

I really like windows 8 and the metro menu. I just dont like or use the metro apps... but I know I am in a minority. I use multiple OS`s and multiple desktops so I handle change and different desktop styles really well. The average user does not like change.

I wonder what the game plan is this time around because people still need their old windows style back but modernized. I for one do not mind the Metro Apps on the tablets they are suitable on those portables but not on the desktop. Is it so difficult to develop separate systems for the desktop and the portable like what Apple does?

What? :wtf: I only switched to Windows 7 a mere 8 months ago.....

still running XpSp3 on my three home PC's...... nutting wrong there....

It was just the marketing and naming that was a problem. Should have been called Windows Tablet so PC makers wouldn't have been confused about it being a desktop operating system.

I hope they bring back the Windows XP theme or while they're at it open up the platform so we don't need third party hacks to add our own themes.

Can't wait to see what exciting features and improvements they will make and how it will compare to Windows 8.1 which is currently not that bad with all available updates installed. :D

So much confusion within their own ranks here. They admit 8 was badly received, and that is largely because it focuses on touch/tablets instead of desktops, and then go on to say that their focus in the future (and for 9) will be mobile first?! Well of course it's going to ****ing tank in desktop sales if you aim for the mobile market................again.

They need to realise they cannot compete in the mobile market before they lose DOMINANCE in the desktop market. Business whole sale licences are a major revenue generator, but any guesses on how many upgraded their workforce to 8?

I'll buy Windows 9 if it's a cheap upgrade for 8.1 owners and caters for the desktop experience adequately.

I didn't like Windows 8 and the constant crashing I would get, Windows 8.1 really made things a little more stable for me, and Windows 8.1 Update 1 was even better! So I am interested in seeing what Windows 9 has to offer...that new start menu is looking nice.

I am still on Windows 7, mainly because I do not want to run pirated Windows on my laptop, but I will see if I can't get a genuine key of Windows 8.1. I like the Windows 7 glassy UI, wish Windows 8 / 9 would have it too :D

Will probably be a free upgrade for Win 8/8.1 users.

It's going to have a sort of hybrid start menu, something between the current start screen with live tiles and the old Win 7 start menu. This will be enabled by default on non touch devices, the current start screen will be the default on touch devices with an option to switch it both ways on touch and non touch devices according to user preference.

You actually have something good to say about a MS product? Colour me surprised.
