Microsoft adding OpenAI's ChatGPT to Bing

Microsoft Corp. is preparing to add OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot to its Bing search engine in a bid to lure users from rival Google, according to a person familiar with the plans.

Microsoft is betting that the more conversational and contextual replies to users' queries will win over search users by supplying better-quality answers beyond links, said the person, who did not want to be named discussing confidential product roadmaps that remain in flux.

Competition is good

Although this may be a signal that Microsoft is planning to buy Open AI

I haven't tried Bing in a long time. A couple of years ago it was laughingly bad. Will give it a try again though and see if it got better.

No thanks. Can't beat Google in hyper local search.
That is the main place where Google beats everyone else.

I use brave search for pretty much everything that isn't local and it works quite well.

This was always the obvious direction to go. ChatGPT is utterly incredible and for a search engine to offer such on-point and conversational responses to queries would usher in the next generation of search.

What is less clear is how MS plans to achieve this. GPT requires eye-watering resources to be trained periodically. It doesn't have access to current affairs. Do they plan to train GPT-4 and subsequent models every day on their entire Bing index? I'm not sure the entirety of their Azure platform is capable of that level of computation.

Bing isn’t so bad anymore, sometimes when I reach a dead end on Google I’ll have a quick look on Bing and I’ll be really surprised at how good the search returns are. It also supports using your voice to activate searches on any browser, unlike google that will only allow it on Chrome.

There is no chatbot within a mile of ChatGPT right now. The next best is the GPT3-4 API which isn’t the 3-5 version being used by ChatGPT. And MS is probably integrating GPT4.
