Turned off SMS notifications in 2012 or so. Except for OTP's which I'm probably expecting, can't remember the last time I got an SMS that was useful enough to warrant a notification.

Some people really need to focus their energy elsewhere. What a thing to complain about. I recall receiving that SMS. Opened one eye, saw it was discovery and went back to sleep.

5am this morning, my phone was blowing up as my debit orders were hitting.

I agree with this. I don't even receive OTPs any more (FNB app) and literally the only SMSes I receive are companies -- either marketing spam, or some sort of notification ("You purchased R100 at Builders...") .

Honestly the thing that irritates me MUCH MUCH more these days are the 010 and 087 type calls that end up being
1) from a random pool of numbers
2) sometimes legitimate (i.e. arranging a delivery of something)
3) most of the time irritating (Comparative car insurance quote, life insurance, please sign up for this non-profit, please support X to fight Y etc)

How loud is your phone that a single sms wakes you up? I've got my FNB InContact SMS settings set to 24 hours a day, so come the first of the month I always get a whole crap load of smses from FNB for all my debit orders at about 5am in the morning. My phone's set to normal volume and it never wakes me up.

That is not always so easy. Some have to keep it on all the time as they have loved ones that could have emergencies or work that has them on standby. Your situation that allows you to turn off your phone is nowhere near the template for the rest of the country.
Oh dear. Here you go.

But here's the kicker...
If that doesn't fit, then you have to live with messages coming through any time of night. If you're on standby, you're on standby. Tell people to phone you and not SMS. LOTS of solutions.

Best solution, switch the phone off- simple

If an SMS comes in at 2am and it wakes you up you 1) need to replace the "bomb siren" alert tone or 2) go see a specialist cos your sleep game is weak AF.

"We have received your e-mail and assessed your latest complaint"

I started off with "Luister nou goed jy klein bliksem"...hopefully the guy who signed off the notification to send SMS's will be given a snotklap.
