Large part of Gauteng wants to say goodbye to Eskom

The Midvaal Municipality in Gauteng is getting ready to outsource its electricity supply to a private company as it moves to improve revenue from electricity sales and the efficiency of managing power in the network.

Speaking to Rapport, Midvaal MMC for engineering services Reginald Hubbard said the municipality's outdated electricity infrastructure was another factor considered when deciding to involve a private company.

Looks like they are creating a private "City Power". How much is their Eskom consumption? It must be nothing if they can manage to easily get off.

Another "goodbye" Eskom article.

Won't happen any time soon in Cowtang.

Looks more like sensational isn't, click baity article than anything else. Looks like the most immediate thing that will happen is that they are outsourcing their electricity department to a private company, the private company would them decide to source electricity wherever they decide to.

Unless they were a low consumer anyway, I don't know how they are going to say goodbye to Eskom anytime soon.

So Eskom will lose the only municipality that actually pay their Eskom bills.

DA brilliance.

Do I have to read the article to find out who is going to supply electricity to midvaal?

Same. I hate these vague posts that force you to read the Article.

Here though it seems bidding is still open so no info yet.

The article does not indicate anywhere that Midvaal is considering self-generation or purchasing power from a renewable producer. Midvaal is merely outsourcing their electrical network operations to a support vendor. This has nothing to do with Eskom or the situation in Mafube.

Yeah, click bait article to appeal to simple minds. It's a 20 year contract, so maybe somewhere in the distant future they will get rid of Eskom, but for now they are simply outsourcing their electricity department to a private company.

Yip and that's the thing, 9 times out of 10 its a click bait article with fokkal info.

I rest my case.

Wow. Electricity already unaffordable and these monkey's @$$ think it's wise to make it even more expensive because they are incompetent. What party runs this sht show?

I'm sure that would also apply to the rest of the Country aswell.

I am slowly saving for a fully off-grid solution (gas for stove and solar geysers).

I also would like to install a fireplace with chimney/flute...not that we need it in Durban... but I like the sight of flames burning at night is real nice and also keeps ya house warm in mid-winter without chowing electricity.

For the rest of the electricity needs - Solar. I need to research a lot before going forward.

Yes, they are just announcing it now just in case Panyaza claims it as his success when it happens in 10 years. That's one of the lessons we got from the GNU, if you think up of a bright idea, get on top of the house with a loudspeaker, you will never know who will be in government tomorrow claiming your idea ad their own.

If you're doing solar anyway then using gas and a solar geyser is a waste of money imho and makes your solar ROI take 20 years instead of 1-5 years and you'll have cold water on cloudy days.

Just running off the article heading, you would have to be a complete one brain cell moron to want to be tied to either Eskom or the ANC. Getting off grid and protecting your freedom is the goal of every rational thinking person in this country
