Tamil Tigers launch air raid on Colombo

Two Tamil Tiger aircraft tonight attacked the Sri Lankan capital Colombo and dropped at least one bomb on the city.

Anti aircraft fire was heard over the city and the national air force said it had engaged the rebel planes.

A major army offensive in recent months has boxed the Tigers' main fighting force into a small strip of land in the country’s north.

However, the Tigers have a small air squadron and tonight's attack will come as a major embarrassment to the Sri Lankan government, which had claimed to have destroyed all the rebels' hidden runways.
