The UK faces a mini-heatwave from next week, with above normal temperatures steadily climbing to as high as 22C or 23C in the south later in the month, meteorologists predict.

Sunny and dry conditions will prevail in the south after an April during which average maximum temperatures were generally above normal and the UK had about a third less rain than usual.

It is set to turn warmer over the next few days as high pressure sweeps across the UK, with temperatures of up to 21C in southern England on Thursday and about 17C as far north as Aberdeen in Scotland

UK heatwaves are no joke. This country wasn’t designed for warm temperatures - buildings, etc, are designed to retain as much heat as possible during winter, with most windows double-glazed - so we kak off during the 2 weeks of summer.

The Underground gets to the high 30’s with no ventilation except for the piston effect caused by oncoming trains, and there’s no AC on most of the trains. God forbid you need to use an overland train: you spend your entire journey sweating your arse off because there are again no air conditioning units in a metal tube being baked by the sun, with windows that only open about 15cm.

It’s an island, too, so it gets really muggy when it’s hot - think Durban in Summer. I’d take 35C on the Highveld or in the Cape any day.
