Long story short but I’ve done this in Jhb, living close to work etc but this was about 10yrs ago on 10.5k.

Rent was the killer at 4.9k and there was +ve or -ve balance pending how well I managed spend as if I recall correctly I had about 350bucks or less disposable after all living costs but this varied.

What this means is that my asset accumulation (disposable or not) was non-existent and remained so for another 2ish yrs while salary went up rapidly with experience. Parents covered vehicle insurance which I guess is equiv of the sibling phone contract and parental adsl connection/isp I use to cover as I had a download server there.

I have the spreadsheet somewhere..this was 2012/3 it’s become easier to track with 22Seven these days btw. This is an estimate I use to do each year so I can predict things. Nowadays it’s more projections and goals with a lot more disposable.. having a spouse and a kid to cover makes things tricky.

I miss the predictability of life back then.. was easier with limited responsibilities.

I also used to have the smug "why do people have kids" attitude regarding costs etc./snip

I haven't seen any smug attitude about why do people have kids. It's just a fact that kids cost money. All I'm saying is that if you don't have kids, life is generally cheaper. That doesn't mean in any way that having kids is the worse option.

Life just works out in different ways for different people.

@Splinter , he didnt take out Life Insurance. He took Disability cover and Vitality, in the event of him losing a limb or unable to continue with his occupation etc, it would pay the proceeds to him.

Yeah, I deleted my post after I saw it was questioned and explained later. The sins of catching up with a thread post by post :)

It’s a good thing to do even if single.. you don’t want to be dependent on someone and life insurance works out cheaper the earlier you start (cheaper on a per month cost based on plan too.. many options). If I recall this made gym free-ish which is an add on benefit and keeps you out of trouble too.

The thinking was new city, likelihood of accident is high.. I kept living 5-8km max from work.. again have a spouse/partner changes this but the idea is it reduces accident risk provided you not reckless.

Btw what some interns did that year was share accommodation ie get a roommate for the year of living frugal.

That meant these guys had a lot more disposable income.

Yep I also did that at the start of my working career. Either that or live with your parents for as long as possible.

How does one even fit in dating life as part a small budget?

As a guy, pursuing any kind of relationship requires some level of financial "investment" (not necessarily anything too extravagant). How would much would need to keep that up
