Transport and Public Works Minister, Daylin Mitchell, together with Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS) officially launched the first active electric bus in South Africa today.

Golden Arrow’s remarkable renewable energy journey started in 2017 with the pilot installation of two solar plants of 25kWp each. The results were encouraging and ultimately led to two of its facilities being declared carbon neutral in 2020.

Given the success of projects to date, Golden Arrow decided to take on its next project - testing an electric bus. The Company has partnered with BYD (bus manufacturer) and uYilo (co-funding) to test two 100% electric buses for a 12-month period.

how long until it gets stripped for copper?
or the Taxi drivers burn it , because it takes away their livelihoods.

and that is why, its a waste of time getting something "nice" in SA.

MyCiti either tested it already or were told that, the buses wouldn't have the power to make it up the hills in CPT.. don't remember exact details..

So, will these GABS buses do only the flattest routes, or have they been given enough juice for the hills...

Heh? Electric has more torque than petrol or diesel powered so that doesn’t make sense.

You sure you aren’t referring to the tram idea they had for Cape Town a couple of years ago?

Or maybe it’s pure hearsay bullshit.

There are hardly hills in Cape Town anyway.

Jissus.. can't believe you made me do two minutes of Googling:

Anyway, so it's not for MyCiti bus, it was just based on the MyCiti bus specifications, that's where I saw the reference..

you know I'm right, anything "nice" gets burnt/looted/vandalized very quickly in SA.
look at the traffic lights, vandalized, trains stripped for Copper,
maybe that's why we will always stay a backwater African country, because they know things left out in the open will be stolen.

its the truth.

Not sure what he did exactly aside from being at the launch but it's a good move forward. Hope they have the electricity available to power them!

If these electric buses are going to be driven by the same lunatics as the current fleet of Golden Arrow buses then God help us all.

Oh, the forgotten Pat busses. DA is really good at forgetting the past when it is convenient.

Like the first class billing system CoCT has thanks to the ANC - yes, it was not the DA that implemented it, they only printed the handover document when they took power.

Those batteries are going to disappear faster than the crayfish at an all you can eat buffet.

Sounds like **** busses basically yeah.
From the article I quoted, I am wondering if these GABS buses aren't the work of the redesign the original buses were supposed to be going through to improve them and make them suitable for the hills.. It's the same manufacturer, BYD..

They are charging them from their own solar supply “power station” as they like to call it.

Hence why they did the project in Cape Town…
