Minister proposes timelines for shutting down 2G and 3G in South Africa

Yes, get all the poor people to just buy new phones. It is just incredible how decisions are made in the cANCer party, without thought as to the real world applications.

On which cloud do they live? Definitely not on the same one as the general population.

31 December 2023Prohibit new connections or activation of 2G devices
Question how this is feasible? Apart from some fixed LTE services I am not aware of devices being activated for a network.

Most new cheap phones today work on LTE. Many other countries have switched off 2G and 3G. It is something we will ultimately have to do.

Fixed this for you.

Every country is entitled to decide when and how they use the spectrum. No country has to do anything about spectrum besides complying with regulations within their ITU zone. And even that is not obligatory.

Time to see who the eTV of cellphone networks is.

It's taken the DoC nearly 15 years to get digital migration done and now they want to dictate to the paying frequency licencees how to use the spectrum that just cost well over R15 billion, and some of them can't even use it yet due to DoC bungling.

It takes a few Mhz to keep 2G alive, and most base stations can happilly support all the technologies in a single unit.

There are literally millions of cheap 2G devices still in use by the poorest of our population, and now they have to buy new phones because the minister decrees it so.

This policy is racist.

This is also a steep overreach of authority from the minister. ICASA has the duty of oversight and management of allocated spectrum. Not the minister.

Oh wait, there will probably be a 2G migration programme run by the DoC, fraught with corruption and tenders to upgrade everyone to 4G using taxpayer money...

Now it makes sense.

None of the cheapest phones do though, which is an issue as these are the phones that people who need them, and are poor, will get.

Really? I'm out of the loop but I thought by now you can get 4G in the cheapest phones.

Well in that case, and looking at the other reasons given above I suppose we should keep 2G and 3G running?

It's not the consumer phones though, it's the IOT.
