Major announcement about green ID books

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says his department will "work flat-out" in 2025 to ensure all South Africans can get smart ID cards.

While residents born in South Africa have been able to apply for years, naturalised citizens and permanent residents have been left behind and stuck with green ID books.

And how many times have they leaked the biometric data stored on the National Population Register?

so will I get the invite this time, will the Mielie lady deliver it?
maybe with a sack of Mielie's as well?

Sensational headline. It only means anyone can apply. It doesn't mean the system will be more efficient or that they can supply even a tenth of the population with IDs per year.

I'm guessing a lot more people would apply for card ID's if home affairs wasn't a disorganized fiasco with 2 open tellers that are only occasionally manned.

Indeed. I'm trying to renew my passport. I tried booking a date at std bank kingsmead durban which proved impossible with no dates for 60 days in december/jan so I decided to go visit them without a booking. It turns out that I was doing it wrong. I should have manually entered the dates instead of selecting them with the calendar icon button. Anyway, there was absolutely nothing happening at that branch while I was there (I was the only person there) and yet the first available date (once I corrected my error of not clicking the calendar button) was 15 Jan. I asked can I do it now as I am here now. No, you must make a booking.

edit: forgot to mention, this was on 18 December.

so how long does the DA minister get to use the "but its the anc mess i was left" excuse before he is held accountable for being as inept as the party he is happy to get in bed with for gravy train goodness?

oh. the DA butthurt is strong here. lol
But is it as strong as the cANCer butthurt? The cANCer has had over 30 years but will still blame apartheid/old NP.
Germany and Japan rebuilt their entire countries, flattened buildings and destroyed infrastructure and all in less time.

Bollocks.

When have you ever seen a Minister working 'flat out' or working at all?

Cultural and political factors are different in Germany compared to here.

We could have built up faster than Germany here due to our climate and natural resources...but.

The emphasis on making smart ID cards available to all citizens suggests that the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) will allow naturalised citizens and permanent residents to apply for the document.
How does this suggest anything about permanent residents. PR ≠ Citizen.

For Bwana's sake , I hope they get it right.
Why? I've got zero interest in a "Smart" ID.

As a PR, I was invited to apply for a Smart ID card. After 3 applications and 3 months, I am still waiting

A friend went to HA in Cape Town and waited from 07h00 to 15h00 to get service. When his matter had been completed, he asked about a PR (me) could get a ID card. The lady had no idea and suggested I send them an email

FNB Forex dept cannot accept my Green ID book as sufficient proof. It was ok this time last year

Many refuse to upgrade their identity documents because they say the long queues at Home Affairs offices put them off. However, the DHA believes South Africans should prioritise their security and heed the call to switch to the newer document.
This minister's solution is that we must prioritize. Its not free either, why don't they solve this mess first before burdening the entire country with this k@k. Its an absolute nightmare to stand in a line from 6am to see DHA people only to start working from 9am, you lucky to leave this place before noon. Everyday and every office is like Black Friday at opening, no pun intended.
