While I think the minister is playing fast and loose with "facts" in terms of how many people will be without TV signal after this switch off, its still something that needs to happen so that the rank and file citizen who loses TV signal can riot and burn things down to get government to actually do their job in terms of getting the STBs out there.

South Africa initially set a deadline to switch to digital terrestrial television by 2011 and agreed to an International Telecommunications Union deadline of 17 June 2015.

The South African government missed both of these deadlines and every other revised deadline along the way.
Only 10 years late and still not fully resolved..

Maybe we should give them another decade or two to implement our former president's suggestion: Mbeki urges ANC members to improve 'thinking capacity' to address SA's problems

Echoing the concerns of other free-to-air broadcasters, the SABC said a pre-mature switch-off would leave millions of South Africans without access to crucial public television services.

This is the funniest thing I've read all day.

Pre-mature is not a term I used to describe the rollout that already late, post-term, prolonged and overdue by 10+ years and billions over budget.

“As at February 2022, only 165,000 STBs out of the 2.9m indigent households (5.7%) had been installed in the four outstanding provinces.”

Why aren't the indigent households rushing to get a free STB?
Perhaps SABC only has 165,000 viewers - the rest are not interested in SABC substandard programming.

The 0.165 out of 2.9 (mil) - 5.68% - will have a serious effect on what they'll be able to charge advertisers. Not that I care

Switch it off one random day per week for the next year and people who want to will find a way to get their new STBs.

I agree with the minister.

The broadcasters have had years to inform their viewers that they should switch over. But they didn't do it.

I havent watched SABC for 10 years, so I wont miss a thing.

Shut it off tomorrow, I dont even have a dish or an aerial. I dont care.

If only companies like Hisense and Samsung can start bringing out tunerless TVs rather than high end display models which we have to buy. Yes I would even buy a Hisense if they did bring one out. 16k for a 43" with no tuner? Yeah. How come removing a tuner will cost an extra 10k more?

There's a message if you receive the analogue signal. The rest are not interested because they're not seeing the message simply because they're not receiving the analogue signal.
