The only way to really prevent people from getting involved in this is to push this far enough that these criminals get shutdown and prosecuted. Just shutting them down is not enough, people need to end up in jail for this to have any positive outcome.

This is very much the sad truth, the desperate economic situation of some lead them to see unicorns and fairies. I also have a friend invested and as I was making the argument it is a scam, he was saying things like, " the fact it had a negative trading day on tuesday shows its a legit trading strategy. "

The fact it lost money that day is evidence of its success?!?!

There is a cult like aspect to the emotions that tie people up into these things.
 
I reckon in 6 months time this will be a "cool story", just like Bitclub, Bitconnect, et al.

Are they maybe completely oblivious of wrong doing and drinking the Koolaid so much themselves?
