Mixing Castrol EDGE fully synthetic with possible part synthetic oil?

That will be fine Ockie - leave it like that, but keep an eye on it - it should stay stable now. Castrol Edge is just fine - there are no "rubbish" oils out there today, particularly on the synthetic side.

I googled oil usage for my car and it seems it is normal for the car to use some oil, specially in stop go conditions. It has been a good few months since the last top up so it uses it slowly, which seems normal.

Naks you can contact any manufacturer you like and they will give you the same answer as I did - up to 1 litre/1000 is acceptable on a new engine. Castrol Edge is just fine - there are no "rubbish" oils out there today, particularly on the synthetic side.

Of course manufacturers have to say this - they are covering their asses.

Yes it is FINE!! Check my answer above. Don't let these people hassle you with their own favourites! Liqui Moly is German and very expensive - total overkill for your car.

IMHO, Castrol is better at marketing than oil, but then I don't consume for the dump, so only the best for my landy.

And the best does not have to be OTT. I put Fuchs in the landy, oil for a service costs me R470 every 6 months (7 litres).

Like I said above don't confuse using oil with actually needing to topup between services.

If a car isn't using any oil at all then it's obviously not going anywhere much. But generally it should use little enough once run in that you really shouldn't need to panic between services.

Obviously I'm not saying don't check it. But the check is more there to see if something is horribly wrong with the car than to actually need you to top it up.

There is no good reason for a car to be permanently "full" of oil either and overfilling it can also do damage.

You saying Liqui Moly is too good for my car? YOU BASTARD! How dare you insult my car!

lol

Just don't waste your money is what he is saying.

You don't need Ferrari oil in a Fiat....because it's not a Ferrari.

It won't do any harm and if you really want to spend the money then so be it, but you won't see any real benefits.

Spot on there.

It's the reason I think people like Ockie are in a panic when they see the Castrol logo on their cars because they think from one brand to another there is a major difference to the "type" of oil, whereas they all make virtually 99% identical the same thing if you just get the right viscosity and type.

And even then the oils recommended in the book are for coldstarting Europe and often there are better options to run locally.

I often find oil is cheapest at Makro.

But not sure if they stock Liqui Moly.

I'm a Shell Helix Ultra boy myself.

Ockie, what oil spec is required for your car? It should be in the car's manual.

Assuming your car is out of motorplan, we can recommend something decent that won't break the bank.

Other than Castrol EDGE? By spec do you mean that W5-40 number thing?

Ockie - stop being swayed by these guys!

Castrol Edge is 200% good for your car.

I use it in my Jetta, and I've done 250 000 km - HIGHLY recommended.

nope, in your car's manual there should be something like 'Oil spec: 507.00' or 'WSS-M2C-913C', etc.

perhaps tell us what car you drive
