MK1: Can I get a decent trade?

I want to know if I would be able to get a decent trade at a garage for a Golf GTI Mk 1? Or could I perhaps put it as a good deposit for a "prettier" car such as a Corsa.

I know Mach 1's are sought after for speed n maybe more sentimental value, but are they worth much?

Depending on the condition they are in, you can get a substantial amount. People are really looking for stock, factory-condition Mk1 GTis. If you want, you can join the VWClub forum and see what they think.

Any idea how much?
Unfortunately I won't be able to help you there.

Even if you sell it for a packet of peanuts and a coke - don't make the same mistake twice. Don't be a VAG.

agree with JK8, you better off keeping the MK1 GTI , it more valuable in the long run than the Corsa ... this is the 1st GTi, the one that started it all ...they are pretty valuable ... of course i cant tell just how much, really depends on the condition ... but i do know they are very sort after ... R15k i think is stealing that type of car, it has to be in a shoddy condition to be asking R15k ... much more than that ... if it is pristine and i mean pristine (looks like a 2008 model car) R40k is not impossible ... but like i said condition mate ...

Both adam and jk8 have some valid points. It is a very valuable and sough after car. But there are some things you need to consider.

1) it looks like ****1,
2) it drives like ****1,
3) the rear seat is too high people riding in the back end up with their necks feeling ****1
4) when it rains it smells like ****1
5) with so many other ****1s on the road it is not unique.

I don't know what you guys mean by smell. The car doesn't smell at all and it's in top shape. I often get stopped & asked if I wanna sell, but I wasn't sure of an asking price. The ONLY problem I have is the sound, it sounds like a guy's car... if that makes any sense.

But thanks anyway for the feedback, I'll make a decision in due time.

1) it looks like ****1, Luckily, tastes differ
2) it drives like ****1, Have you actually spent any time behind the wheel of an original Mk1 before?
3) the rear seat is too high people riding in the back end up with their necks feeling ****1
4) when it rains it smells like ****1 Really? So does an old Mercedes-Benz when its rubbers are leaking.
5) with so many other ****1s on the road it is not unique. People who actually know something about cars can tell the difference

Nah, ignore them Zeesav. As highlighted, they only tried to perpetuate a myth that the Mk1 Golf leaks like a sieve and the subsequent water on the carpets makes the car smell.

As for the "sounds like a guy's car"... that makes perfect sense.

This discussion is going way off topic, since the OP wanted to know whether she would get a decent trade-in on the car.

Don't ever trade-in a GTi MK1

The Garage will give you nothing for it and sell it for a massive profit. Those cars are legend. Keep it if you can, a Garage will not even give you R 8000 for it, but if it's in a good nick and original you can get over R 30k for it.

Thanks, I saw one advertised in Joburg for about 35k so I think 40k would be max.

After the advice given on here I'm definitely not taking it to a dealer.

Still, don't sell it. Part are very cheap, keep it for a second car.
Rather safe for a deposit on a crappy corsa.

btw, what engine does it have? still original? any modifications?
