I think the times he quotes of 1:20 odd are not from standing starts.

Just as an aside, a friend of mine has an e30 BMW with a e46 M3 engine conversion that does low 21s around Killarney.

The times he quoted in the 20's was for Mclaren, 650S etc.

McLaren MP4-12C lapped TopGear's track (RIP) 16.5s faster than a Fiesta ST. 20s on a longer track, where something like a McLaren can stretch its legs a bit... perfectly plausible.

*edit*

Yes, MP4-12C rather than 650s, but still...

I've seen cars like a Nissan GTR and Porsche GT3 RS do around 1.19s laps at Killarney. Heavily modded Subarus can also crack 1.20s.
But those lap times are almost always rolling lap times.

Standing start at Killarney will cost you a chunk as on a rolling lap you are doing the second highest speed on the circuit at the start/finish line. Probably losing up to 10 seconds on a standing start.

Who is comparing the Fiesta ST to a McLaren?

Hey, you brought it up...

The times he quoted in the 20's was for Mclaren, 650S etc.

Not a comparison; that'd be silly. Just an indication that a 20s difference between a warm shopping trolley and a something like a McLaren, GT3 or the like - even from standstill - is perfectly reasonable.

Another underwhelming Polo GTI?

Very much so. I saw it at the VW Bryanston dealership last week and could only tell it was a new model because they said so.. whoops. Also it has marginally more power than previous model. However, they've come to their senses and ditched the 1.4 motor in favour of the 1.8. So there is that...

If you base your opinion on track times alone I guess.

In the real world the Polo has a nicer interior and a better gearbox. Even if you are a regular at track days only 10% of your car time will be spent on the track at most so it's hardly relevant to me.

But then there is of course the price difference which throws a spanner in the works.

I would like to see an average of 10 laps in each car. Also, by going second, the Fiesta has the advantage of the driver being familiar with the track or having his eye in. For a 1 second difference.

PS: I'm not really a fan of either car.

I'm sure as a racing driver, that individual has never been around that track before...I also doubt that was the only lap they did in either of those cars.

As always, the VW is overpriced and underwhelming.

He did a couple of laps in the polo. He only did one in the ST as it was my buddies car. And he didn't want him to thrash it.

Another underwhelming Polo GTI?

Calling it underwhelming on the basis of a 1% difference in lap time compared to the ST is, I think, a bit of a stretch; see UK CAR magazine's verdict on the GTI:

Overall, there is a whole lot to like about the new Polo GTI. It’s fast, fun, refined, comfortable and well-built. In fact, it’s everything you’d expect from a smaller product from the same brains as the Golf GTI. It’s not as hard-edged as the Fiesta ST, so ultimately lacks the same level of entertainment at the limit, but probably makes a better fist of things day-to-day.

The Fiesta's long been lauded for its handling prowess, and it remains impressive. That's not the sole buying motive for most people though.

Have driven both, both are fun little cars around town that completely melt to proper performance oriented cars (and some regular sedans at speed).

I actually spanked a Fiesta ST last night. Driver wasn't a sport though and wouldn't chat to me at the next set of lights. So I spanked him again for good measure.

Spanked him with what?
