MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

But he does have wrestling and grappling. He didn't lose due to a lack of wrestling or grappling.
I respectfully disagree. but happy to agree to disagree tho :)

IMHO, Having good TD defense does not mean that you have good enough wrestling or grappling to be considered a complete MMArtist IMO.

Saying hes a Great striker i have no problem with. One of the best.
Saying hes a great MMArtist is what i am refuting.
Therefore, as a complete MMArtist i say hes overrated. and that was apparent in this match and arguably in the matches leading up.

My view is the same when it comes to guys like O'Malley, Edwards, Connor, etc. Despite holding belts, they will always get tested by guys who are better rounded in all skillsets. And more times than not, they will come up short.

however, all mm artists focus on their strengths first.
he has over 70 K1 fights how much more does his striking need to be refined?

time on the mat would have done him better.

that said, the MMA guru made a valid point regarding athletes that transition from other fight sports. He specifically made reference to the Dagestan fighters, saying that because they train MMA from the start, they have a huge advantage compared to say a kickboxer or boxer coming into MMA later.

Wrestling cardio is something that you have to develop from a young age

Take down defense is an extremely important skill. He's generally very good at it.

Look, I'm not the guy's #1 fan, but he destroyed everybody, defended his belt multiple times due to his high-level skills everywhere. He isn't the best wrestler/grappler, but he doesn't need to be. He just needs to be good enough.

Not sure how he can be overrated when you look at his resume. Seems like some recency bias.
Recency ? but how far back do you want to go ?

I give it to him that he takes the hard fights... but its mixed results. for the last 4 years.

Yeah, the game always change when the younger generation comes up.

No. Drinking, lack of discipline and immense PR responsibilities lead to a loss to Strickland.

Yeah, I think Izzy went/is going through a bit of a tough time. He looked very good over the weekend, but him becoming so emotional at the presser.. he needs to deal with a few things imo.

I think the Perreria fights took it out of him, mentally a bit.

In this sport, there has only been a handful of all round elite fighters. Jon Jones, Volk, GSP, Islam to name a few on the top of my head.

Most of the time, a fighter is elite in one area and proficient in the rest. Time will tell where DDP lands, but for now, he seems to be very good all round.

Even Khabib who a lot of people consider the LW GOAT was not really well-rounded. It just so happens the thing he did well couldn't be stopped from doing. Relentless pressure, plus wrestling, plus GnP plus a great chin.

Good TDD makes a world of difference when it comes to winning. Look at Francis-Stipe 1 vs Francis-Stipe 2. Once Ngannou sorted out his TDD he was unstoppable.

Oh and I'd add Mighty Mouse and Fedor to your list of all round elite fighters.

I was wondering the same thing

Does a portion of the above go to the team?

Yes the fighters pay their coaches and staff out of their earnings. Medical expenses not related to the fight are also on their own account.

Fight purses are weird. So Israel is apparently earning 750k/1mUSD compared with Dricus 500k.
Adesanya was the reigning champ for quite a while and would have signed a new contract when he was bossing MW. Dricus is on a decent contract (for UFC at this point in time), and would have also earned PPV points as champ. If he continues as champ for a while he'll pick up a much better contract.

A lot of combat sports are like this. It's not necessarily how good you are, but what audience you bring in and what you can negotiate. Unfortunately, for most fighters in the UFC, how much you ultimately end up with after the fight is dependent on Dana White, who's a petty, vindictive, stingy piece of sht.

I also think DDP's local earning potential has now shot through the roof. Every big brand will throw cash at him to strike while the iron is hot.

What do the coaches earn, what does it cost to field a championship team?

If I remember correctly a few coaches over the years have claimed the gym takes about 10-15% of the fighters payout. Obviously the higher tier the fighter the better for the gym.

It is possibly that the CiT gym of coach Morne will probably get around $100k-$200K of that purse which will cover coaches, training partners etc
