BY the ANC ? Sure, but they always do that, they have to in order to deflect attention away from their corruption and looting.
They've acquired additional ammo now to mount a full on assault. Propaganda machine is already in motion. A lot of garbage is being shared on whatsapp ridiculing Maimane and steering opinion a certain way.

You seem to forget that it was Zille who started "grooming" black leaders to attract more of the black vote. And her disastrous courtship of Ramphele and then Agang.

Zille balanced the need for representivity with the DA's founding philosophy of not using race as a determining factor and under her the DA placed continued emphasis on merit and equal opportunity. Look at how she fought Lindiwe Mazibuko over the latter's attempt to double-down on racially exclusionary policies in the workplace.

Maimane moered that out the window as race increasingly become a central theme under his leadership.

Don't see this.

MM should have resigned after last election, he was a disaster.

I don't support DA, but a clean-out is positive IMO.
One of the main ingredients needed in surviving politics is the ability to manage perceptions, the DA did that correctly until it came crumbling down with the De lille saga, perceptions counts as much as reality in politics.

That one never competes for anything, she gets positions given to her.
Chief whip perhaps - I don't think there will be anyone left anyways so they got limited choices. Plus she got dark father - so that is some appeal ;)

Related but slightly OT, I have some sympathy for Gwen. The amount of flak she gets online for "rejecting her blackness/African-ness" (whatever that is) is ridiculous. I'm not white and I am such a mixed bag culturally (if they ever put "bastard child of the internet" on our identity documents I will tick it). Yes, she changed her name, so maybe part of her rejected her cultural roots, but until we know why we can't really judge it. She may hate being black, or she may hate a part of her culture for a good reason. Only she knows.

I would love to see Steenhuisen rise to the top. Every single speech of his that I have watched has been great.

The question arises is whether the DA now leans hard into non-racialism and makes a white person the face of the party (very risky considering their perception amongst the average joe), or if they backpedal and go for someone less known but the right skin colour (I'm not super clued up on the DA but as far as I can tell their major African/black/not white people seem to have left except for Van Damme and Solly).
Makashule Gana, Khumo Ramulifho, Nqaba Banga, John Moodey, Madikizela, Caleb Cachalia, Solly, just a few names off the top of my head, all have good profiles.

If promoting a relatively unknown, inexperienced young black man to be the leader over more experienced veterans of the party looks balanced to you...

ANC leadership may all be in jail by that time. Assuming NPA gets organised.

Do they have matric like Steenhuisen though?

Watching ETV and quite a few KZN DA members have gone over to the ANC. This just proves that they were never in it for the good of the country. If they were then they would've gone over to COPE or some other opposition party, but not the frikken corrupt useless ANC.

Relatively unknown to whom?

You are aware that he was the DA's mayoral candidate for Johannesburg in 2011 and stood as official opposition in the Johannesburg City Council?

He was also made the national spokesperson in 2011 and was elected as the deputy federal chairperson in 2012.
