Adriaan Basson: How Helen Zille built and broke the DA

That headline should read:
Adriaan Basson: How I and my woke colleagues propped-up the EFF and then went to the high-court to demand special protections from their critiques, and got dismissed.

Another journalist saying the DA is morphing into a "far right" identity. Crikey...

In 10 years’ time, how will the party attract supporters and recruit new members if reclaiming the party means sliding back to a far-right identity?

Yes, that is one way to try win them. You must join politics.

It is not for white liberals to win over black voters. White liberals have to understand why they need get out of the way to allow a black centred progressive party committed to the constitution to grow.

As Adrian puts it, I still remember HZ as "Zille's track record as activist and journalist was solid. A fierce opponent of apartheid, her words and deeds reflected someone with strong morals and a backbone. ". I even understand her colonial tweet in context.

And there are many non-whites that still consider her like that. But, she seems to be really trying really hard to win over flock that left for VF+

Talking about Zapiro and his art I have a feeling Mabulu is busy with some masterpiece wherever he is.

The DA will be just fine. They lost a couple of black faces, yes, but they will rebuild.

Depends on how successful the media's campaign is - and our media has been very good at helping sow racial division. They've all collectively jumped on the ''DA wants to burn crosses and lynch black people'' narrative.

"The DA is awesome, look how great we are and all our success stories"

2 Weeks ago:

"The DA is a non-racial organisation committed to building One South Africa for All. "

Politician's are going to politic.

For those who think their highest virtue is their non-racialism and therefore see it as non-negotiable:

After spending 5 decades in this country I can safely conclude that none of my fellow South Africans (including myself) of any hue who I got to know well enough to form an opinion about can claim to be a non-racialist.

I regard non-racialism as a noble aspiration. I am sure the way I raised my children will make them less prone to racism than I am.

Our country is obsessed with race. Our history shows that when our rulers go unchecked they happily play up this national obsession with disastrous consequences for our economy. (The Apartheid regime did it, the Zuma ANC did it.)

We will not change our racist national character until we leave the label of the world’s most unequal society behind us. For that we need economic growth, which in turn can only follow from political stability. That requires a functioning democracy where governments are held accountable peacefully.

Democracy never produces optimal solutions. If it achieves its objective of creating real competition for political power it serves to protect societies from the worst outcomes.
If you expect more than that you are not realistic.

We are embroiled in a bloody fight for survival. Fight for democracy 1st, only once that is secured can we aspire to greater heights.

Don't forget the sophisticated whites.
I did not imply all whites are sophisticated, rather that all whites think they are sophisticated, especially the classical liberals like me.
Besides a good 30% of them voted VF+:)

They won't be just fine, they will rebuild for sure but they won't be just fine. In case you forgot, they had 59% in the WC in 2014, started the De lille fracas and they dropped to 55%, not too long after that we now have this, and you think they will be fine?

Which political part has ever been fine after some infighting and a split? The biggest political party in the country is still not fine even today, the IFP and Cope are still not fine.

I don't think SA can claim to be a democracy just yet, till the ANC lose a general election we are at best a one party state De facto one party state.

The definition of democracy does not change if the party you hate keeps on winning. We are a fully fledged democracy, believe it or not.
