The ANC cannot be held accountable nor challenged in parliament even if every single opposition party rallies against them.

On paper its a democracy. In practice its a one-party state.
And same thing with the DA in the WC, that's what happens when you have the majority and that is exactly how democracy works, if you don't have the numbers it's hard luck for you.

If only the other parties did not spend so much effort tearing themselves apart maybe things would improve.

Is this what those taking the DA back want - a party representing minorities.

If that is the case then will they acknowledge that their desire to find a comfortable political home for themselves is creating a crisis threatening our infantile democracy.

The black middle class stands between us and a Zim scenario.

They need a stick to hit the ANC with, like they did in 2016.

Without the DA infrastructure and its financial backers there is scant chance that Mmusi and co will mange to build such a vehicle for the black middle class.

Lets hope corporate SA wakes up to this and realise that the DA wants to be another minority party and move their resources from the DA to whatever grouping forms to fill this space.

The Black middle-class are the group which got most alienated by the DA. Stats show that more Blacks voted for the DA under Tony Leon than did for the May 2019 elections under Mmusi. The Mmusi/Van Damme/etc narrative, that they lost white racists to parties like the VF+, was a tactic to obfuscate this aspect. Mashaba made the same mistake: he trampled on the CoJ ratepayers, forgetting that the majority of them are no-longer white.
/Identity-politics: OFF

The truth is that most South Africans no longer care for all this race-based, group and identity-politics nonsense. Most want to get along, prosper and establish a future for their children, and requires a government to enforce the rule of law which protect their rights to strive towards this future. Regrettably that is not the country or future in which our current breed of politicians and journalists will thrive so they push everything that leads to disruption and breakdown of this future, all for their own personal gain.

I wish this was true. Unfortunately our obsession with race has never been greater.

It is difficult to establish democracy when a society is so tribal and when one tribe is dominant.
Parties will face pressure from their traditional tribal base if they try to break out of these constraints.
It is so sad that the DA could not resist this pressure for the sake of the country.

So, if people that vote ANC elect some other party, will that be a democracy in your opinion?
Once more than one party have been in the hot seat, then yes.

There is a reason we are listed amongst Russia and Zimbabwe in the 2n'd link I put up. Until the point where we actually have either an opposition coalition or outright win rule the country we are a de facto one party state.
Whether we become a democracy or a one party state will only be known after the ANC lose an election.

Who's obsessed with race?

You actually speak to the problem: group rights trump individual rights. The moment a (political)movement tries to breakout from this construct, they are quickly criticised and demonised by those who greatly benefit from collectivism.

I don't know if racial stats are available for voter patterns. This 2004 article suggests 2% black voters supported Tony.

"Having garnered only about 2% of black voters in April, Leon said: "In this way the DA will become a more diverse party without sacrificing anything that we do for our voters in other communities."

“We grew our support among black South Africans from 0.8 percent in 2009 to approximately six percent in 2014,” party leader Helen Zille told reporters at the Electoral Commission of SA's (IEC) national results operations centre in Pretoria. "

As long as you don't count me as part of the race-obsessed populace, carry on.

Off course I know you off the interwebs - all the virtuous people hang out here. They are so different from the ones around the braai fires.

Opportunism. EFF excels in that regard.

I agree, but I see it is also those who promote themselves to be in the middle that is also agreeing with this point made by Malema. The media and opinion leaders are all out to get the white DA back to their senses and to expose the IRR. That anti-IRR lady, whoever she is again, in the UK must be proud.
