Mobile data contract prices: Cell C vs Vodacom vs MTN vs Telkom Mobile

I recently travelled back roads between Durbs and JHB and came to the realisation that outside of the major CBDs, Cell C's coverage is atrocious, so this needs to be factored into a buying decision if you plan to be outside of CBDs and require, you know, to actually make and receive calls, let alone use data. MTN and Vodacom had pretty good coverage and only dropped signal on a few occasions...

Cell C's new offering only seems to be reducing OOB prices, and not competing on package price

The Vodacom 10GB in the table also comes with an additional 10GB of NightOwl data.

Exactly the same offering as Telkom Mobile for almost double the price. :( And not to nit-pick but their after hours starts at 11pm which is a big bonus for me.

If you travel along the coast Cell C is boss with the notable exception of Amanzimtoti

I guess if you an irresponsible dimwit and cannot manage a suitable data bundle size and constantly tripping over your shoe laces and finding yourself out of bundle, cell c is for you?

True that. No data for basically the whole N1 between BFN and CPT since it's roaming on VC I think.

CellC is also for those who can make an informed choice. You don't go to them on price alone. You also informed enough to to know when to avoid other providers, or CellC themselves. Or contracts. I am sure many many Vodacom customers months into their 24 month contracts feel like dimwits, esp when they look at the newer packages let alone those from the other suppliers.

Also Cell C you cannot use the data in most places at the moment. It's no use saving money and not being able to use the product.

Also, their MyAccount system on their website has been broken for over 20 days now with no fix in sight. So good luck with them.

Don't you just love the smell of "gentleman's agreement" price fixing in the morning?

North coast of KZN they all performed well, so at the end of the day it rather boils down to where their respective weaknesses are...

I have both a CellC prepaid SIM (my main number) and an 8ta prepaid SIM (as backup). Should CellC coverage be poor or nonexistent, I can always load airtime/data on the 8ta SIM and proceed as usual should I need to.

I'm not supporting Voda/MTN anymore.
