NO

Completely Different technologies. Rather hold out till iBurst launches or get ADSL for now .... get ISDN or R7call more ... I'd NOT suggest MyWireless unless you only want to do local downloads/work and don't mind double billing etc...

I thought they might work off the same technology. Guess what thought did...[:D]

Another question then; is iBurst really going to be that fantastic? How do we know for sure that it is not going to end up like another Sentech.... full of empty promises!

given that this is SA and that Sentech with the golden egg went EXACTLY the telkom route - its highly likely. Thats unfortunately the situation. The SA consumer learns very quickly and is very weary in this regard. I mean MyWi is still usable for 90 odd percent of ppl out there wanting internet access yet they wont get it due to bad public opinion. So thus we all know now that you may as well bend over and get ADSL and get it over with (unless if you're like me you refuse to get a telkom line or refuse to get any telkom services until they are reasonable)

the MyWi modem is a glorified cell phone ... it is a 3G device ... so should be compatiable with other 3G kit but this is not garuenteed

IBurst works on Wireless Networking standards - 802.20 I think. Sentech works on 3G cellular standards.

It would be like trying to use my cell phone to connect to my Wireless LAN - it just cannot ever happen.

OK, let me throw a different spanner into the works, so to speak.

Once iBurst (and possibly WiMax, later on) is up and running, what are the chances of Sentech getting their act together and actually fixing/improving their network, when they start to feel the heat of competition from iBurst, and all their subscribers are dumping them in favour of iBurst?

For one thing, either ways there would be more bandwidth available to the Sentech customers who do stay on. Heck, they might even reach their 4:1 ratio. Even if that's shared instead of contended, that means 32k/bits per user, i.e. 4k/bytes/s per user guaranteed! :)

lewstherin: quite correct, they are one of the proposed 802.20 specs.

Koffie, just remember that an ISP only buys as much bandwidth as it needs. So, unless they're in loooong contracts for such bandwidth it would be cost effective to scale back on the available capacity on a simple 4:1 or whatever strategy.

As to iBurst:

I hope they don't ask me for my modem back after this *grin*.. While I am really enamoured with the current performance of iBurst I do not think it will be the alpha and omega of wireless connectivity. For specific applications its going to be brilliant. What it works for will be largely dependant on the package offerings that WBS put on the table and by the sort of coverage provided by their network.

The more competitors the better in my opinion.

With a private, competitive company you would be correct in your thinking Koffiejunkie.

The problem is that Sentech is neither private nor competitive - which means the people running Sentech are neither too.

After all the news that has come out today, it feels good to have some compitition coming into market. My folks live out in the UK. My dad complains of downloading at 130kbs on his 1.5meg line. One day we might have the same complaints... and this is only going to happen when we refuse to use Telkom (hence no ADSL yet) and support the SNO and others that might follow....

To hell with telkom, and I wont get my hopes up for iBurst, just yet.
