I draw R1000 a time from an ATM which lasts me a couple of weeks.
Most of it goes towards fuel for the car and the rest to small purchases.

I'd get a garage card or use a debit card at the garages but the only thing that stops me going cashless are those car park pay machines.
I wish they could take a CC, then I could stay cashless and have a valid excuse for those car guards that pester and annoy me so much.

CC and Garage debit card all the way for me. I've even managed to get by with not withdrawing cash from the ATM at all.

The only problem is looking like a cheap ass at church every Sunday during donation time, especially when the little kids sitting next to you drop their R5 coins and you just pass the basket along.

Cash is still king in my books.

I usually pull fairly large sums from an overseas account via the ATM and I'm kind of reluctant to pay the thieving wunch of bankers their cash deposit fee.

I hardly ever have cash on me. I use my debit card to pay for stuff and usually have around R20 in coins to pay for parking or the attendants.

I prefer not to carry cash with me at all, most of the time I just swipe my card. If I do have cash on me though its for a specific purchase.

We're supposed to have enough money to have anything left over after debit orders?

News to me :/

Of course. How else are we suppose to pay for our crack and cocaine. Dealers don't accept debit orders nor do they take credit cards.

I've seen a few garage parking machines that accept Visa, Master and Amex cards now. Specifically at the V&A Waterfront and JHB and CPT airports.

I usually carry no cash. I find I just spend it if I have it. Paying for parking is about the only this I use it for these days.

Only carry enough for Toll gates to and from work, otherwise all other money is handled by the wife :(

FYI, garage card is accepted @ toll gates (as well as credit cards) and is usually faster to get through. (Look out for the "Card only" toll booth)

I try not to carry cash.. I have this thing (and I have no clue how I developed this behaviour) where I think that I need to carry all my cash that I have with me. So for I have R100 on me I carry that with me, which is fine, but if I have R5000 lying around at home for some reason, all of it needs to come with me. So I try and use a card most of the time... otherwise that weird instinct I have kicks in...

Damn, would you actually walk around with that much cash? Reminds me of an old timer from Sea Point who used to walk around with wads of cash spilling out of his breast pocket and then one day the inevitable happened, the south easter came and blew that cash away.

I prefer to carry about R200... nothing more.

If I have to buy something or whatever, I like to use my debit card, where possible, I like to use EFT.

When I was in the US a few months ago, I noticed how few people seem to carry cash. Buy coffee, out comes the plastic. Buy a drink, out comes the plastic. Purchases of a couple of $$'s, all on plastic.

To me, it seems inconvenient to use a card all the time. Easier just to toss a couple of bucks on the counter than wait for a slip to sign.... But that's the way it is going there.

With smartcard enabled credit card these days you don't have to sign a slip anymore... well.. depends which bank it is. Some still require you to sign even though you've verified with a pin and everything...
