Geoff Rehmet, Dimension Data subsidiary Internet Solutions’ (IS) new business development consultant, says according to prices based on rollout in other countries, IS estimates the monthly cost of the access portion is between R46 and R70

At the public hearings into Telkom’s service, MWEB’s Mervyn Goliath said the copper infrastructure, is already in place: “How can a perpetual monthly charge be justified when much of the infrastructure is already there? “ he asked.

Reacting to Telkom’s claim that it won’t be able to make its money back on its investment, Rehmet says: “For Telkom to suggest Icasa is not permitting it to recover cost is disingenuous. Telkom has only itself to blame if it is misunderstood, as it is the sole provider of ADSL. During the public hearing process, Telkom had ample time to adequately inform the regulator”

Oh well said - my sentiments exactly. Is it down to the possibility that Telkom did not take the matter seriously perhaps? The sheer arrogance of Telkom will be their ultimate downfall IMO.

This has been my notion all along. Telkom has never taken the members of MyADSL seriously, which now stands at 5100 members and growing rapidly.

Agreed. I think the sheer momentum of what's happening now is a bit of a wakeup call to them!

I have to agree, I have always felt that Telkom, Sentech & WBS quite simply ignore us. However that seems to be changing at an incredible rate.

Telkom is charging us for splitters, powersurges and DSLAMS and everything else is in place...I just think, how many times we have paid then for the copper infrastructure already?

ISPs buy three gigabytes worth of service for R157.
I've been wondering how much the isp's make off each account - or more to the point - how much telkom makes off that portion too!

So for a 512 line they're making 477 + 92 + 157 = r726

In its findings document, Icasa said the issue of allowing access would be addressed in the convergence bill and its facilities leasing regulations. The regulator also outlined its intention to reopen the investigations into the submarine cable that brings international bandwidth to SA.

Rehmet says one of two potential outcomes would be positive: “Either the cable may be declared an essential facility, enabling Vans providers to obtain wholesale access, or Icasa may terminate Telkom’s monopoly on landing stations.
