Monthly savings from switching from a Kia Sonet 1.5 LX CVT to a demo 2023 GWM Ora 03 GT

R835,950 for the range-topping 400 GT Ultra Luxury ORA

KIA SONET 1.5 CVT LS. Price. R 404 995

An extra R430000 to save a R1100.

Actually another useless article which makes absolutely no sense.

They bought the Ora used, think it was under 500
There's an article about it

So? They could have bought a used Kia also for half the price. If you want to make comparisons, your should take the extra you pay for the EV into account too, also extra interest, insurance( which I guess is much higher on Ev) etc.

So he used pricing for a new vehicle which is incorrect, I'm simply pointing this out to him.
Shouldn't be so hard to understand

He traded a used vehicle for another used vehicle (with only 12k on the clock mind). And said:

This difference [The monthly savings] is roughly the same as how much more we are paying in vehicle instalments on the Ora.

I.e. Right now he's basically breaking even on the trade-in. Except - The car he now has is practically brand new. 12k odo is nothing. And as he stated, it has much better features and performance. A petrol engine is hardly considered broken in by that point. Less than a year's worth of driving at his pace.

In only 3 years time. Once he's paid back the finance for the difference on the trade-in. He'll be saving this amount each month. Likely more, since the price of petrol will go up. 3 years is not long. This is a clear investment into a substantially stronger financial position. Over what can be considered the short to medium term.

Like it or not - It's clearly a win...

Goodluck with the GWM, service costs and spares. You are gonna need those savings, so don't start spending it. Also bytvas with the eskom increases.

I saved R1500 per month by spending nothing.

I simply decided to work from home.

Getting an extra battery at home to charge more from stored solar power. Already worked out that adding that to our home loan will be cheaper per month than continuing to use Eskom.

The calculation assumed zero solar power usage but I'd actually say about 30-40% was off our solar system.

So he either put in a lot of effort into finding this bargain. Or he just got lucky.

Either way, buying second hand doesn't scale.

The electric car wave hasn't hit SA yet.

Which is a good thing because Eskom can't handle it.
There are two more GT models going for less than R500,000 right now.

One step down model for R30,000 less than we paid.

The sales have been low because BYD's Dolphin is substantially cheaper, with similar specs.

No great secondhand deals on the Dolphin yet though and I don't think it looks nearly as good.

The headline reads

Monthly savings from switching from a Kia Sonet 1.5 LX CVT to a demo 2023 GWM Ora 03

So we want full comparison on full price new on both vehicles. Not a single persons situation of what he had and what he got randomly.

In civilised homes we get taught "I want doesn't get".

Why would you say do all these secondhand Ora's have such low mileage? Is it that bad to drive?

OH and please tell us the insurance amount on them vs your Kia

I see a lot of sour folks in this thread eh
Not so much sour, but the pricing figures don't make sense.

This is price brand new for a Sonet

Where is the saving?

Also, for me, the actual range of the EV that don't make it appealing to me.

I should have added the article could have been structured differently sure but it's more nuanced than what people are making it seemed here.

I would never jump on this train/justification personally but then again I'm a "frugal furker".

I still stand by the fact that many folks here are jumping on the hate train.

If you only do short trips then EV might make a lot of sense, as would owning one of each if you have the disposable income. For me personally Ev is far to expensive to be a viable solution as I simply travel far to much and don't have the luxury of the downtime needed to fully recharge the battery again.
