I am considering a DTEK50, mainly 'cos of the security features.

That said, one of Blackberry's selling points is the fact that - in order to maintain the high level of security offered - they (BB) bypass the US carriers and send out Google's monthly patches immediately they are issued by Google.

Given the [generally] abysmal service (for updates) offered by the local carriers: has anyone any idea of what will be happening in South Africa ?

NB: I have no knowledge of Android 'phones and am assuming that the local carriers put their normal "we are testing" six-month delay on updates. Is it possible to apply patches directly from Google ?

Security updates are exactly that. They're not OS updates.

Many thanks for the quick response.

OK, so no need to wait for the local carriers to issue the security patches ?

Can all Android 'phones apply the latest security patches supplied by Google ?

Not really sure atm. I know Google did say something about security updates bypassing the carrier.

Why you so worried about security?

Let's just say that 45 years in the IT industry has turned me into a big-time cynic :D

Android powered devices by BlackBerry in South Africa gets security patched every month .
Been using the PRIV over year and the DTEK50 for just over a month.

Always got my updates monthly during the 1st week of the month the latest by mid month.

Also BlackBerry updates it's core apps via Google play monthly .
