I'm obviously missing out on something that I don't understand.
Fsck knows what that is.
Scheduled for 2am
2am arrived, no electricity
Now how should I perceive my surroundings?
The power is off? The power is out? I've been load shedded? This is a blackout?

For one, there is no load shedding implemented after 10pm.

Says who?
And why are those times appearing on the schedule then?

#Load_shedding stage 2 was terminated at 22:00 today. Noting that some areas may take longer to restore power.

he implied load shedding never goes beyond 22h00
Take today as an example. When I look here https://www.capetown.gov.za/en/electricity/Pages/LoadShedding.aspx

It sometimes say in red stage 2 from 08h00 - 22h00. Fine that's clear.
Today it says Currently experiencing load shedding stage 1. No time given

What appliances are you able to operate with the 2.5kVa genny? Thinking of investing in one seeing as this situation is going to continue...

A few lights, 2 x LCD screens, 1 x plasma screen, router, 4 x laptops - with plenty to spare.
Fridge - let it kick in first to take the load - then add the rest.

Thats about all I need.

Suggest you look at Adendorf for a genny, Thats where I got mine.

Also, I have made up a 4 way extension rather than backfeeding - easier and safer without the expense of a changeover switch.

But fridges don't just "kick in" once.

I've got a 5.5kva and prefer to leave the fridge off.

No, but the initial loading with a cold genny really pulls power.
The genny has a choke device - this runs full open once its started and the revs drop when the compressor kicks in but will stabilise when its running.
The peak loading on a cold start is the killer.

I should also point out that older fridges are less energy efficient as are the older ballast fluorescent lights.

The newer fridges and ballasts dont seem to pull as much peak power.
The compressor for air will just on run at all - peak load just kills it.

I think with a genny, one has to add devices one at a time to see what it will take.

The obvious no nos are geyser, stove, kettle, older ballast lights, high demand pumps.

Edit ... if you want to swap 5.5 for 2.5 kVa ...... :) Save on fuel .... :) :)
