Very nice place.

Could easily settle down there. From the beach you can see the tops of the skyscrapers in BA.

You can pop over to BA with a 1 hour ferry ride, and go and watch opera/ballet, or whatever tickles your fancy.

Homogenous population, so not much racism, etc. Think mainly Italian/Spanish descent.

Locals were pretty friendly, and I think that I could learn Spanish.

Unfortunately no direct flights from SA to Buenos Aires or Montevideo, that ended a few years ago.

Not entirely. Many are remaining here while the getting is good, but have contingency plans to get out in a hurry. Still decent money and a good life to be had here - just send it all offshore and have your backup plan ready to go for when the poo hits the fan.

What I'm seeing on FB emigration groups is those who aren't very well off leaving in droves as they can't buy their way into another country and put plans in motion over the past few years to get ancestral visas sorted etc.

It’s worth also considering that “while the getting is good”, you’re probably falling behind income/wealth wise in comparison to where you would be if you left earlier. Depends on one’s situation of course, but a senior role in SA often means significantly less net savings than the equivalent role overseas

My opinion from my lived experience:
The level of stress people live under in SA is unbelievably high (unless you completely insulate yourself from everything that is going on). Constant awareness of your surroundings is draining. Constant worries about when the next Eskom fokop is going to be. Worries about the worsening water situation. News of corruption and lack of consequences. Worries about the economy. Worries about NHI, EWC, prescribed assets. It all adds up. I had no idea how bad it was until I spent 3 weeks out of it in 2019. It actually felt like a physical lightening of a load. That is what actually spurred my wife and I to investigate living elsewhere.

It's coming from someone who calls fear irrational and he's only been affected once blah blah ...... I and others get exactly what you're saying - his type won't. It's amazing how being out of that constant state of worry and stress and fear can completely change your life for the better. On top of that, it applies to rich saffers and poor saffers alike who managed to gtfo.

Not everyone is Cambridge or Hollywood material - what's wrong with emigrating to seek a better quality of life with lower (or different) stresses? Why does that have to be called "running away"? Do you get some kind of medal or achievement popup when you die if you got a new motorcycle, a new hairstyle and stayed on in the country? #ImStaying kudos points?

In my personal circumstances, I can save higher % and $ amount monthly here than I could overseas, while having better working conditions. This is purely down to relationships/networks which have been built up over nearly 2 decades. It would take a long time to reproduce that in a different country, and may not even be possible at all. I know a number of people in this position (most of them business owners who know the party will end eventually, but are prepared for it).

People been leaving for fear since 1993.

The difference is since 2010, well more 2015, the ability to leave has become more of a pressing issue as ability to move for opportunity has not been easier. It is now, due to technology and just a lot more transparency, a lot easier to work out very accurately exactly what your cost of living will be and make an informed decision.. combo that’s with the slide in emerging market currencies as USD devalues it’s tough not to move unless you get paid the discount premium.

Combo that with tax & lifestyle comparison and yah.. you soon need to earn significantly for the risk (the Africa specialist experience).
