Let me preempt the less knowledgeable and say there is a difference between load shedding in a general sense and electricity cuts due to poor transmission or distribution capacity.

Problem in this case, its not poor transmission or distribution capacity... its piss poor fscking maintenance of the distribution infrastructure... so ultimately similar to Load Shedding as it was entirely avoidable. The biggest difference now though is that its not predictable.

Agreed. Although in this specific instance the wording of the article seems to imply that it is a case of the distribution infrastructure no keeping up with demand, and not necessarily a case of poor maintenance.

Then the breakers at the edge of the distribution network are not being properly maintained....

Illegal connections should only kill the edge distributor that they are connected to, not entire suburbs.

And the smart meter roll out excuse is BS. That would be sign posted, and it would only take down a few streets at a time for a day at most.

with illegal connections and the continued roll-out of smart meters contributing factors.

WTF has 'roll-out of smart meters' got to do with supply of electricity being erratic?
