Use warm water, dishwashing soap and steel wool. Once you've cleaned and dried your pot, coat the inside with cooking oil. Heat the pot and when it starts to smoke, wipe clean with a paper towel – repeat this until the paper towel comes out clean.

You should be able to remove the rust with the steel wool.
Then you should be good to go.

i have found that after a potjie and cleaning it i store the pot upside down and dont get surface rust anymore
i tried once lining the inside with cooking oil, that turned out to be a sticky mess

I recalll taking out the gizzards from the birds, but looking at the rotating pumpkims, something else appears ro be flopping around inside there......

I just remembered but my Dad use to cut a green tomato in half and scrubbed the inside of the pot with that to get rid of the rust.

I also use the newspaper method to store the pot, works perfectly.

Then when I make the pot I read all the old news whilst drinking my dop.
