I just use this now - good quality instant read thermometor


Awesome thermo. I bought a Thermopop when I started cooking 10+ years ago and it's still going strong, but that one looks :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

The thermometer I use if I absolutely need to know (I think it was R60 at China Town):

Within 2 degrees C at boiling and freezing so pretty much all you need.

absolutely nothing wrong with this and used to use something similar, only reason I used instant read is keeping lid open for as short as possible. If you lookn you aint cookn

Lol, reminds me of my days back on the farm.

You drive 30 - 40km to go fix a wind-pump or a dam, take a pack of boerie with for lunch and a braai grid. Nature provides the firewood..., light colored wood that you kick out of the ground. Burns HOT and fast and you can light it with a single match. No time to dilly dally there, braai and get done. Makes me lus to light a fire right now.

Sooo...has anyone gone back from gas grill or a weber with briquettes to straight wood...or is it a one way street with no looking back....and why? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each method?
(there is a gas grill standing at my rented house that I"ve never touched and a buddy offered to lend me his rarily used weber)
I'm still on old school methods. A couple of the positives are you can sit in a circle with your buddies and enjoy the fire and its portable to an extent

There are occasions where each one works very well
There is no perfect Braai option
Sometimes there are kak factors to consider like:
a) Wet wood
b) Kak rain
c) Kak wind = tons of smoke
d) Tired, but you gotta braai
e) Other

I do charcoal weber at home as that is all I am allowed to do on my tiny stoep according to body corporate, then on weekends I go to the dam to my caravan and make a lekker wood-fired braai.

At home I would even use a gas Weber Q series if I could afford one for those times where I just wanna cook a piece of meat quickly. But there is no way in this lifetime I will ever be able to afford one

Each I s'pose has their strengths.

Gas is quick and easy but not a real fire flavour. I used this when I had no other fireplaces and wanted to braai.

Weber is great for doing something in an oven, but not in the oven. I do roasts and smokes and Pizzas in it.

Then there's the trusty wood braai. Since I've built mine, I've never done a conventional braai on anything else.

One more day of graft then early Thursday morn it's back to Ai Ais, three fires a day for three days and plenty of ale. Rare rainfall predicted, so bringing me sturdy Gazeebo with to put over the cement camping braai , nothing gonna stop my weekends drunken antics.....

Very weak signal out there, but will try to post if I can...

I choose between all three, as and when the need arises. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

If I could only keep one it would probably be the gas.

Same here. Depending on the occasion I'll decide which to use.
Can't beat gas for convenience though.
