Thanks! Vegans really suck the life out of a braai. Tip toeing around the Grill of Glory when I'm throwing over huge steaks and racks of ribs. Even worse is that it's perfect poitjie weather, which means now I'd have to cart 2 poitjie pots and double ingredients.

hallo almal. A strange question, but a good place to ask it. We have to include 2 vegans at a braai next week. I have the meat part well sorted out, but any good suggestions for something special to braai for these two (besides the sosati stick with veggies)?
Why do you HAVE to include them? Are they your parents?

Easiest one is Halloumi Cheese in blocks and brown mushrooms on a kebab stick. Lemon juice and on braai. Then make a garlic lemon butter sauce w small paintbrush over every turn. Done in 8mins flat. I also buy some bread dough from the bakery and roll it some stokbroods which I add some fresh herbs to the dough and salt and then chuck on some butterbonce done. Another winner w the veganators is pita pockets toasted on the grill and go buy some hummus and tzatiki from the store and right as your coals are done chuck a full aubergine along side of the coals and place coal pieces around. One turn of that bad boy. By time braai is done that guy is charred to pieces. Tong lift out gently slice open and spoon out the innards and serve w pitas and dips and humus. It's actually bloody tasty. Bonus points if you can pull off all 3 dishes

Sounds great! And on any normal day I'd eat this myself - however, vegans are a special kind of self importance, so halloumi cheese is off the list, as is the butter.

anyway, apologies for derailing this lovely carne thread.

First time ever I had to put someone on ignore in the braai thread.

Anyway if you see this guy rambling along here. Tell him I said Braaibroodjies without cheese is the ultimate vegan braai dish. He can also wrap mielies in foil on the braai and some asparagus on the braai identifying as vegan wors.

Trust me, I’m just as offended as you

Or do a more BBQ style sauce and add a splash of liquid smoke to the sauce to get that smoky flavour, serve with lime to squeeze on.

Edit: Try find another recipe with a BBQ sauce you can baste with while cooking.

Tell them to bring their own fake meat or whatever...and then you'll "cook" it for them.

I have the same here within our new circle of friends. I refuse to cater for them.

Uninvite them or let them loose on the lawn.

Yes. Will Vegans even eat food that was braaied on the same grill as meat? If not they should just eat the non meat side dishes.

This is always funny for me. All these Vegans, Halal and other funny eaters expect you to cater for them when they come to your place. But when you go to them you must eat their choice of food, they don't cater for you.

This is why you never see a meat eater storm into a vegan restaurant demanding a steak...

I cannot stand these "special needs" people of the culinary world.

One whole cabbage, cut it in half and braai only one side. Tell them you saw the recipe on the Food Network and everyone raved about it. If you want to add a side, a can of Koo creamstyle sweetcorn.
I doubt they'll come for another braai..

No, they won't eat off the same grill. Nor will they eat the braai staples like pasta and potato salad. It's a massive PITA actually. Can't even just make a big batch of garlic bread. I'm just letting the missus handle it all. My duty is simple. Chop the wood (with my hand forged hatchet - drool), make a way too big fire, and braai vleis while getting cooked myself.
