Ford Figo TDi, what do you need more than this? Practical and cheap (to buy and maintain)

Have to agree with beans. Got a 1year old Figo for a good price, see it lasting 10 years just like my Ford Ikon has.

I've always been told diesel engine parts are alot more expensive than petrol. The Figo is small and fuel efficient though. But it will have to be serviced by a technician or ideally Ford SA, that can't be cheap.

Normal services can be done by ones self. It doesn't have a service interval indicator and such that needs to be reset. Just the basic electronics that make life easier.

What kind of mileage do you guys get?

Don't have one yet, but know of friends and family that owns. From what I've heard, around 24Km to the litre (max, diesel).
I am going to get me one later this year, at the moment my wife use our car and I use a cheap chinese bike to get to work. I upgraded from a Atos and ended up with a Nissan livina, just before our second kid was born. Thought it to be practical, and it is. Just a little too heavy on juice for my taste. But wife likes it.
When I'm looking for a car, I like to get one that's light on juice, cheap to service and parts freely availible. I never wasone for buying a car for bragging rights.....and I hate double cabs.

I understand your reasoning with the 2001 Corolla. What's the price for one in good condition though?

Sometimes age can be an issue with a car, things start giving hassles due to age (not necessarily due to mileage). The seats get worn, the steering wheel itself and such.

I like your thinking on cars, im not against double cabs but they are waaaay too expensive and heavy right now for me.

I have seen absolutely mint ones go for around R60k. 50k if you get really lucky!

How much do you guys think you would need to spend to get a decent runabout? Reading that MMM blog, I think I need to make some drastic changes, and one of the things I think I need to change is my car.

But, do you think a R60k car such as a Toyota Yaris with 100000km on the clock is going to be reliable? Or a Hyundai Getz? Or Polo.
