Takealot reveals its most popular products, including a few unexpected items

Takealot has revealed its most recent sales trends and while the list has some regular best-sellers like TVs and small household appliances, there are some surprises too.

According to the company, load-shedding has had a marked impact on sales patterns, with products like Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS's), inverters, and generators all experiencing higher sales volumes.

Gas products have also seen a recent increase in sales, with the company specifically mentioning Cadac cylinders, cooking equipment like gas stoves, and gas heaters.

In 2020, some of the most popular categories on Takealot were TVs and laptops, as well as personal protective equipment like masks and sanitiser.

So what was the surprising items?

Didn't see any either.

Exactly.

It is not surprising people buy new tech items.
It is not surprising people buy items related to coping with Covid (masks and red wine)
It is not surprising people buy items related to coping with blackouts.

I've personally bought wine, beer etc from TA and friends and family also have.
They have quite a wide variety and with the covid restrictions of when you're allowed to buy booze, it comes as no surprise that people would order it online - from the biggest retailer (Takealot).

Seems bizarre that anyone can think it's actually "surprising".

It might not be surprising to you guys but it is a surprise to the industry. Takealot's most popular items were that of convenience, like diapers and dog food. They have successfully taken a big chunk of market share from competitors for Appliances and TVs. Just think about it, up until the pandemic hit, Massmart dominated the Appliance and TV market. Now Takealot is on top, that's big!
