Just out of curiosity, which are the most viable career options in South Africa? Barring the more obvious choices such as Engineering, CA and Acturial Science>

Software development.

You'll hate your life, that is a given, but if you are good you'll make some decent money.

You are still in school and/or considering a career path?
1. Don't get a job you hate that pays a lot
2. Don't get a job you love that pays **** all

I studied Electronic Engineering, I am now considering Software Development not because of the money but I have fell in love with it when I was doing it as a subject. So to add on what Hamster said, decide on what you love.

Eh? I'd think cardio thoracic surgeons pull more per year.
I was chatting to a gyno surgeon & she said so whilst discussing job options for her daughter. Come to think of it that must qualify as one of the most bizarre discussions I've ever had. Plus pretty sure I was the only finance guy ever to set foot in that surgeon rec room.

Never fact checked it though. Gyno salaries are not at the top of my priority list right now.

like I said in the previous post there is no real way of knowing what is the best job for you

you can look at the survey tables for MBA graduates, CAs', doctors etc and see how much they earn and who is satisfied etc but you have to find out for yourself

even though I have 3 degrees behind me and I've worked for six years, I've now decided to study further and leave my current field of work, I do not hate my job but thoroughly enjoy it- I live and work in the same street, my hours are amazing (8-4) and my boss is probably the best manager I will ever have the pleasure of working under- but I feel the time is now to move on.

my own advice is stay out of management, management has very little to do with work knowledge as such but around managing people, and if its one thing I've learnt is that the more people you interact with, the more problems you have.

Amen.

OP, what do you mean with viable? Some people study traditionally "viable" things and end up below-average (or hating their jobs), some others study things that aren't as secure, and end up doing great.

What do you like/enjoy? Find professions related to that, and then choose the most viable one out of those.

I'd just like to give my R0.02 and say that you should never base your choice of career/ studies on the school subject you enjoyed the most/ did the best in... you'll pretty much hate it by the the time you get to varsity.

If it means anything to you, I would pray for some guidance from up Above coz its a very serious choice, consequences for life... just like choice of spouse :) wouldn't wanna regret either.

my homie has had his bursary contract terminated and he as of two days ago owes: R257 000. The Lord be with him!

Go speak to people such as cousins, friends parents basically anyone you can get hold of that is doing a job you might be interested in. I was signed up for engineering based on teacher advice and changed over to finance due to talking to a few extended family members a week before lectures started. Probably best decision of my life as i would have bombed out of engineering due to lack of interest whereas its the opposite with finance.

Get a prospectus online from your university of choice. Just page through it and consider what you'd like to do, without worrying about the money you'll earn or status. Then post the list back here and have people who followed those career options tell you what it's like.

There's an ugly tendency among high school students who get a few distinctions to say: "F00k it, I'll become a <CA/Engineer/Actuary>. My marks are brilliant and that's what I should do." Completely forget what marks you got in school, they mean absolutely nothing. Some of the top students at school fail at university level.

I also started out as an actuarial student in my first year and dropped out because I hated it. I then studied computer science and math. Ended up doing more math than compsci in my undergraduate studies, and was much happier with my choice.

Hahhaha it's funny because it's true. Software Design and Development can be very rewarding if you are happy to sit behind a computer all day and work into the early hours of the morning.

If you are a natural problem solver then go for it.

Worst advice ever. Once you've seen a blue waffle you are going to be scared to go anywhere near the honey pot for the rest of your life.
Hey he asked for viable & I gave him viable. Had he specified pleasant/balanced/rewarding the answer would have been different.
