You can question many things about South African politicians, but their virility is not one of them:
Media reports about President Kgalema Motlanthe's personal life violated his rights to privacy and dignity, the ANC said on Tuesday.

"The reports are unwarranted and unjustified," the ANC said in a statement.

The Sunday Independent reported that Motlanthe, who is separated from his wife Mapula, was intimately involved with two other women, one of them a 24-year-old pregnant with his child.

This was followed by a report in the Star on Monday, in which Mapula Motlanthe told the newspaper she did not know of her husband's extramarital affairs.

If he cannot keep his house in order how can he be expected to manage this country.
Any news that would indicate he is not up to the task should be reported. There is not much positive to report on him anyway.

LOL - Him keeping a house in order resulted in about R500 000 damages to the house.

Surely his decision making abilities are relevant?

...would you like to be fired from a management job because you are rumoured to have an extra-marital affair?
How does that impair your decision making?

Gay people don't.

The point is that in a country with major moral issues (people having unprotected sex with rampant AIDS), setting an example is a prerequisite to good leadership. Motlanthe's escapades is not setting a good example.

Politicians choose to be public figures, and by doing so they open themselves up to public scrutiny. If they can't behave, they shouldn't be in office.

If I were a public figure, then yes. Integrity in office is paramount.

How can one set a good example about what they do in private, huh?
We don't care whether he has 3 or 4-somes without a condom that's his business. As long as that is done in private and does not interfere with the job at hand.
The media are running short of stories to report on perhaps....
who made extra-marital affairs bad behaviour anyway? aren't you attempting to hold everybody to the same arbitrary moral standard that you hold your self to.

I think the biggest question is would the general public still vote for him to be in office knowing the real truth about him? I think the whole issue around JZ answers that one. We may like to think we are a moral country, when in reality it seems like we're a bunch of sheep.

I am generalizing I know, but that is the way it looks to me.

Ok, integrity with public funds, upholding the laws etc I agree but this is beside the point. How does his behavoiur interfere with your own life?

If it was truly done in private and with the necessary precaution and with fair discretion, sure... but then the media wouldn't have found out about it, so it wasn't any of that. Setting a good example is easy - live your life according to morals you as an office bearer of the country expects - or don't take the job.

I can choose to be a public figure or not. If I were to be a public figure, then I accept that my private life is open to observation and even scrutiny, and I should be prepared to live my life accordingly.

Bill Clinton was a very good example of a man who abused his power and had escapedes in the premises of the white house. There is no suggestion that all of this is happening in public, but knowing the media I wouldn't put it pass them to go snooooping paparazi style

Bill Clinton faced impeachment for that.

Of course there's a distinction between private and public. But it's the one person who acts on both, and the integrity of that one person is relevant in both domains.

George Bush never claimed to have integrity in the first place.

And if JZ and Motlante value their privacy so highly, they should do us all a favour and STAY AWAY FROM PUBLIC OFFICE.

Sheesh. Is it that difficult to figure out?
