Cape Town - A Cape Town man is expected to appear in court on Monday after he allegedly knocked down a group of tourists, killing a Swedish national and leaving five others injured last week.

The 28-year-old man was driving along Arum Road in Table View on Wednesday night when he hit the pedestrians, confirmed Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut.

Table View police said an eyewitness saw a vehicle speeding along the road moments before the incident.

The driver was arrested on the scene and immediately taken to have his blood tested for alcohol.

Traut said he was arrested for culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The group of tourists came from countries including Holland, Israel, Denmark and Sweden, he said.

Paramedics at the scene tried to save the young Swedish national, who had sustained multiple injuries, but were unsuccessful.

Just wondering what tourists were doing in Tableview, it's hardly a sight-seeing location.

Yep. I wonder if this was close to where all the nightspots are.

Arum Rd is split by the west coast road/Bayside centre the bottom bit runs from one block from the Night club area up to the West Coast road.

Backpackers and AirBNB are quite popular in the area, and its on a regular bus route into the city.

Yes, I know exactly where that is. I wondered if this happened close to or in the night club area. Years ago I worked at Cubana there, and saw quite a few close calls, and quite a few people damaging their own cars. Edward Street in Bellville has also seen it's fair share of accidents.

Yep, unfortunately a lot of drunk idiots use those back and side roads to avoid Blouberg Rd where the cops tend to have roadblocks.

Yep. It also seems that if you drink, drink till past 2am, there seem to be no roadblocks then. :erm:

Only the best view of the mountain, one of the top beaches, cycle lanes, kite surfing, the most affordable accommodation in CT.
Also its more accessible than the peninsula with the BRT buses... so no, its actually a big sight-seeing location.

That's in my road, I saw the lights and cops racing to the scene just after it happened. Hope that guy gets a stiff sentence!

You know, not as fast as people might think. I reckon 60-80km/h range, the distance from the first point of impact to where he stopped his car is about 30m. Was 20:50 though and in that exact spot there's no street lights so it was pretty dark.

The popular theory is he must have been drunk.
Was it in the street or on the sidewalk? Funny thing is I almost drove over a cat while I was looking at what was going on there, good thing I was going slow enough to break in time.

I can confirm, it happened literally in front of my home, most of the injured were lying on my property. I actually witnessed the whole thing in real time as I was outside by pure coincidence.

Now everyone knows where you live
