A traffic officer and a motorist died in a shooting in Lavender Hill, Cape Town, on Wednesday, Western Cape police said.

"Two unidentified males approached the driver of a Toyota Corolla from the direction of Lavender Hill, while he was being issued with a traffic fine for a traffic violation," Captain Frederick van Wyk said.

"The driver was fatally injured and died on the scene, while the traffic officer [who stopped the vehicle] was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment."

Safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith confirmed the 35-year-old officer's death in hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

He said the officer had stopped the vehicle for a broken tail light and that the men had approached him from behind.

"Two men have apparently been arrested. We are hoping the arrests will be for the right people. If not, the city will offer a reward for information and get the special investigating unit involved," Smith said.

Can the motorist's family sue the Metro Police for making the driver stop in a dangerous area without taking adequate security precautions ?

Should the cop have given him a fine along with a bullet proof vest?

No, just the basic precaution of having at least two Metro Cops, with one keeping watch should have been enough.

Seems like gross negligence by the Metro Cops.

This is Africa, not Holland.

That's an odd thing to say.

Soldiers must be deployed. CT is no longer safe.
Speak to your Friend Jacob - we asked for troops and he gave us the finger.

And it's time we started carrying two cops per vehicle - this tragedy could have been avoided were there a second pair of eyes.

Man Arrested After Cop Killing

A man was arrested on Thursday following the murder of a Cape Town traffic officer, Western Cape police said.

Steenberg police caught the 26-year-old, from Parkwood Estate, and confiscated two firearms, Captain FC van Wyk said.

One of the guns belonged to traffic officer Wesley Woodman, 35. Woodman and a motorist were shot dead on Prince George Drive, in the Lavender Hill area, around 9am on Wednesday.

City of Cape Town safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said on Wednesday the officer had stopped a Toyota Corolla for a broken tail light, when the killer approached him from behind and opened fire. The motorist died on the scene. Woodman died in hospital later that day.

The arrested man was expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on a double murder charge on Friday.
