They have taken their time, I have had my 32GB wifi Xoom for quite some time, and it has travelled the world since I got it.

But I may get a 3G version later, will think about it. I didn't get one at the time because it is a USA model, and I didn't want an issue with USA frequencies, etc.

In any event, I can highly recommend this unit, way better than any iPad.

Edit : And for the Asus fans, you get a bluetooth keyboard and different desktop stands that give you even better functionality than the Asus Transformer.

But I think that the Asus is cool too, just was not available when I bought my Xoom

Xoom: MTN = R289; VC =R 589.

Anyway ... Xoom is so not cool anymore. Too late. And then AGAIN the prices are not cool either.

Jola, if it was way better than the iPad the sales would back that up ... and it for sure doesn't.

Don't agree that it is too late, it is still a good tablet. As for the pricing, well, that does look a little steep - I paid less than that.

I was in the USA when it was launched, Motorola's marketing was really poor, I'm not surprised that it did not sell.

Also, the Apple marketing has to be seen to be believed - I was on a few USA campuses in June/July, and every campus shop stocks ONLY Apple & iPad, very little else to be seen.

So, no, the sales figures do not reflect the relative quality of the units - still think that the Xoom is better than an iPad !

I honestly struggle to understand the pricing policy here. They know what an iPad costs and they know people prefer the iPad when prices are similar ... and it is all over the net that Android tablet prices will drop to compete ... and now this.

I agree with that statement, they really had to come in with competitive pricing - but I guess that the FX rate has not helped !

They should sell the wi-fi only version for R3500. They will soon be forced to do so. Those entering 24 month contracts at these prices ... especially the VC price ... MUST be flippen mad or desperate. I like Android A LOT and would like to get an Android tablet, but never at these prices.

I was tempted by the Atrix, but after seeing that Motorola wants R4000+ for the "lapdock", I realised why they wanted to go after other companies to sue them for royalties.

And Vodacom is selling the Atrix for a few bucks less than the Galaxy S2. WTF Vodacom???

Why does just adding 3G up the price so much? It' must be a tiny component.

I also agree, makes no sense IMO. But do the following:

Get the wifi only and get a cellphone that can create a wifi hotspot (eg moto MB525 defy) and just connect to your phones wifi to browse. And after awhile you realise you dont actually spend that much time online.

The only real use for me is gaming and reading textbooks when on call (doctor). Got my Acer Iconia A500 for R4000 well worth every cent.

Also dont forget to factor in following costs:

Screen protector
Case (preferable booktype [form factor] & leather which looks and feels cool) and these tend to be more expensive if not generic cases.

All in all tot cost to me was : R4800

Was wondering if I should fork out an extra R1000 for 3G, since I have WiFi access most of the time. Planning to use WIFI Hotspot through my HTC Desire. Just don't want to regret not getting 3G sometime down the line. Why are textbooks(e-books?) a problem?

I think the Xoom is too little, too late after the Samsung Tab 10.1. I just got a Tab 10.1 and it's an awesome device. Took about an hour before my iPad was permanently demoted to paperweight status. The Tab10.1 betters Apple's offerings in any department I can think of, and for a geek it's a no-brainer purchase. The more customizable Honeycomb is awesome. It becomes "YOUR tablet", not just another array of icons, that's "An iPad". The screen is spectactular, everyone that's seen it has made a comment on it. You can pick it up for R500 more than the Xoom and it's well worth the price.

how is vodacom still in business with their non-competitive prices? cocaine? inception? a free shag with someone slightly more attractive than life's "hotness limit" for you? or is it that trendy tshirt they give away?

Because 80% of their client base don't bother checking pricing anywhere else. They just assume VC has market related pricing.

On the tablets, I'm hoping I can get a decent Android 10.1" tablet for around R3k by December (not these old 7" Android's running 2.2, but a proper Honeycomb+ capable one) - at that price point, it makes sense for me to buy one. For now, I just can't justify R4.5K+ ...

Yes... once again South African distribution channels sucked big time. We usually get stuff as its old news in the rest of the world.

The other question I would like to know, is moto-slow-rola planning on offering the 4g / LTE upgrade to customers if we end up buying the 3g model as per the rest of the world ?
The mybb article mentioned the local network providers are busy testing / rolling out LTE support.
