Please can someone advise me?

So sick and tired of waiting for ICS to come to this device - its bloody pathetic
I now want to root and need some advice.
Do you recommend it?\
What then happens to Android market or "play" now?

How do you load new apps?

Thanks guys

I have never found it necessary to root my Xoom.

But then I have had ICS for months.

BTW I have a USA wifi version.

Maybe you should have a look on XDA and manually load ICS.

Root you lose nothing but gain freedom to change things (Think of it as simply getting your admin password of the works PC)

Custom roms on the other hand change a lot, most if not all of them come with Google Play and even if it doesn't you can always download the Market app yourself, ot will work fine as your device was certified by Google so will accept it.

I normally root all my devices even if I stay on Stock like my Xperia Play, Custom ROMs on the other hand depends on what they add vs what I lose. For example if I go Custom on the play I lose PlayStation certification and access to my PlayStation Games so its a hell no.

On my Xperia S I am still in 2 minds about custom ROMs but my HTC Desire went custom as fast as I could.

ASUS Eee Pad is on and off about stock vs custom as I love the speed/power of Custom but it lacked the extra features that ASUS added (Office and other apps)

K for a start I am very weary of that "Nightly" word, as it mean people chop and change crap when they feel like it so you end up getting a lucky packet OS esp of one developer was drunk the day he added stuff. <-- I might over exaggerate but thats how I feel about it.

If you find a More stable platform to start I would recommend going there 1st.

If you know what your doing and love experimenting go right ahead, just heed my warning.

Oh and before you even think of flashing custom.... find a way to return to stock. That is more important than anything else.

Thanks man I thought this was the best one from searches, any advice on what YOU would recommend? What would you use?

Thanks again

See thats where the return to stock part comes in as finding "The one" is not as easy as picking em off a list from a quick google session. Its a hit and miss till you get what you are looking for.

1st I would find something with the word ICS + Stable in it cause thats what you looking for. If that doesn't work for you(Lacking features or support), you move onto the next one till you get to the nightlies as a last resort. If nothing works you go back to stock and wait for official.

Hence the playing around till you get what you want. <-- tinkering part that iOS users don't like.

Thanks man will have to look around, don't understand why we have to wait months for something that was released so long ago.

If you looking for Official just google XDA for it, I am sure there would be a rom based on it.

OTA = Stock even if its not available for use yet, just make sure you read up before you install. Baseband and all that info might differ based on rom.

Sorry man what does that mean ?

I dont have the device in front of me so I can not look for numbers or something that will lead me to finding the Stock OS

Only you can do that. That is why I am giving you the links to check for yourself.

Ahhhhh ok thanks man sorry all Greek to me

Well you have 3 avenues to get help:

  1. Get me exact same make and model and I'll do all the testing then advize
  2. Google and find out for yourself with loads of reading.
  3. Go ask in XDA under the Motorola Xoom section

Sorry thats about the best I can do. :D

@Elimentals does custom roms normally allow you update over the air?
Also, does MIUI and CyanogenMod get updated over the air?
