Billionaire businessman Dr Patrice Motsepe says there are high-level discussions with, amongst others, the Motsepe Foundation and banks to launch a multi-billion rand fund focused on agriculture, farming and related industries. The fund will unlock opportunities for specifically black agriculturists and give them preferential access to loans.

“The farming industry is at a very critical stage,” says Motsepe, the founder and executive chairman of African Rainbow Minerals. “The involvement and participation of black people is important. There is a huge sense of urgency to make sure we have sustainable black farmers in the industry.”

If done correctly, with no corruption, this could be a good thing. It's very difficult for black people to get access to agriculture. They should give qualified farmers opportunity though, if this will just be another cadre enrichment scheme, or giving farms to people with no training and experience it will go down the same way as previous initiatives.

He furthermore says, “We have to work with everybody, as we have to work for a future for all. We can only have a future as black farmers, if there is a future for all farmers.”

Isn't this like the 100th time the ANC tried something like this the last few years though?

ANC been trying this for years and has always failed simply because they are corrupt. Just another political scheme aimed at enabling them to steal more.

So the ANC tried something and failed no one else should try? By that logic why do we vote for other parties come election time the ANC failed at governing so why should anyone else try?

Huge tracts of unused land available. Ingonyama trust owns 30% of the total KZN land (nearly 3 million hectares), yet almost none of it is used for agriculture. The WHOLE of SA has just 1.3 million hectares under irrigation. there is plenty land in that 3 million hectares to be used for agriculture.

Since it isn't done with my tax money, they can do what they like.

But, throwing money at the problem never solves it...

Mahlati says AFASA is working to ensure that all farmers with potential are supported. “We are profiling successful farmers to highlight and encourage each other, particularly black farmers. When they are supported sufficiently, you can succeed. It is not about race, but whether you are supported sufficiently.”

Firstly they have to distinguish between commercial farming and subsistence farming.

The first requires land, money, skills and hard work.

The second requires land and hard work.

Unfortunately the impression is created by government that land immediately = money. They conveniently skip the part in between.

Today's generation want iPhones, cars, money and a house in the suburbs...gining them a piece of land will never change that.
